can someone tell me about how much I should expect to pay to have the bearings checked and repacked as needed on a dual axle?

Bought it last year (2001 model) and don't know when this was last done. I do know I never heard any kind of scraping or whining from the wheels while towing last season.

thanks

We did our last spring. Had them check the brakes too. I think it was around $300.

My question would be, how often should you have this done? We put about 1500 miles on last year.

I repack bearings about every 30,000 towing miles or every two years (whichever occurs first). If you tow considerably less it would be better to set it up on a timed bases, like every two or three years. Bearings should be CHECKED more often than that and the best time to do it is when you do your annual break adjustment and inspection.

The required maintenance interval is 12 months or 12,000 miles. Remove, clean, inspect the bearings. Replace if necessary. Repack and reassemble.

I pay about $70 per axle at the local Jayco dealer. I'm still on the original bearings with this procedure. Losing one in East Bubba on a holiday weekend can be very expensive.

Had ours done at a dealer the first time for about the same as Chuck paid. DH doesn't pay to have anything done that he can do himself, so since that time he just gets all greasy and dirty avery spring, but knows for sure it's done right and saves some $. We carry a spare set of bearings with us for those times we do go through East Bubba. Inexpensive insurance and DH said that in a pinch he could change it in a parking lot - oh, let's hope not!

x2!

Since blowing out one myself this past summer I'll only do them myself. An afternoon to replace and repack all four corners as well as adjust the brakes. No special tools required only an ability to read the instructions Also carry an extra set with me as well as the grease to do a set at the side of the road if the event happens again - less than an hours work total.

Shum, What's a "blown out" bearing, and how do you tell you've had such a thing happen?

Well you take notice when someone is waving you down telling you ya got smoke coming out of your wheel well!!! .....but I did not notice while driving and may not have until I had lost the entire wheel.

..........and believe me after you pull over and do a brief inspection you will know right away what happened

Here's my vid of the aftermath.........

i took my dealer's word that that they had checked the bearings and they were fine.
a couple of thousand miles later, i'm looking in my rear view mirror and the trailer's left front wheel was at a 45 degree angle.
i had thought my brakes were dragging a little but it was a bearing going out. never saw any smoke.
the bearing cap had disappeared and the wheel and brake drum were barely hanging on.

that's what a blown bearing can look like.
luckily, the axle had not been damaged but i had the shop do all the other bearings.
