I purchased a new TT and am deciding whether to reinstall my Equal-i-zer or purchase a new hitch entirely. The reason for purchasing a new one is I got tired of the brackets moving all the time even though I checked them. For those of you who have this hitch, how many have had to drill into the tongue to secure these brackets? It seems like the only way to stop that from happening.

I have read just about every post about these hitches and it seems to be a common problem. I am debating whether to just go with something else like a Reese Dual Cam. The constant monitoring and tightening got tiresome.

We've never had issues with our L-Brackets moving in the 5-6 years we've run the Equalizer Brand hitch.

It sounds to me like you already made up your mind. Look at Reese, Centerline, Blue Ox and perhaps others.

Same here and the biggest issue is to torque the brackets properly since over torquing will ensure they will move.

About 12 years for us, and around 70,000 miles, with Equal-i-zer hitches. Never had L brackets move, never retightened them. Most miles with previous TT and 6000# hitch, about 9,000 miles on our new TT and 10,000# hitch.

My EQ has a hole for a shear bolt to be put into the tongue. It shows it in the instructions. One thing to try is cut some 1/2" conduit 2" long and use it as a spacer above and below the tongue. That way you can torque the bolts down and not worry about bending the brackets. I wouldn't worry about drilling a hole for the shear bolt, your tongue probably has a few holes in it from wiring and other stuff.

There was a redesign in late 2010 that supposedly eliminates the need for this self-tapping bolt for those brackets that can't seem to not walk. I discussed it at length with Equal-i-zer support. I am about to order a new hitch as I need a bigger one for a heavier trailer on order, and I am going to specify a mfg. date after Dec. 2010, per the Eq support tech. The date is inked on the outside of the hitch head box.

My brackets have never moved. I think the key component to your decision is matching the hitch rating to your actual tongue weight. Because of lighter or heavier tongue weight a new hitch may be needed.

Hi, I have posted this before, but I have some new pictures of my cure. The tubing that I use is 1/2" copper because it will give a bit. (crush) My brackets no longer move. I have had this set-up for several years now.

Thanks for the great idea.
