We've had problems with ours flapping in the wind and keeping us awake at night. Get the highest quality ones you can. We've purchased an inflatable wedge that inserts under the topper that helps some with the noise.

If they are still available I would get the type that pull out separately from the slide so you can leave them in during big windstorms, etc.

Also, they help =shade= your slides which, typically, don't have a lot of insulation in their roof. Good thing if you're camping in sunny climes. As far as cleaning the top of the slide, for me, at age 54, I don't have a problem going up to sweep off the slide...just got to remember to do it. :-)

Carefree makes awnings that are seperet from the slide out and work very good, can pull out when wanted and put up if wind bothers you. We had them on our past rig and liked them a lot, I would have on this 5er but came from fcty. with others.

Never had a need for them. Where we travel we have big issues with wind - wind to the point that slide toppers actually billow causing the top of the slide to tilt in and break the seal momentarily. If there is rain mixed in with the wind, It can cause some problems. Alot of them just tear. I've seen folks at the lake just pull the slides in if we get a windstorm to save the toppers.

Not everywhere is like that, and it doesn't do all the time (or I wouldn't go back), but its enough that we tolerate the inconvencience - if any - of not having them.

When we camp in the woods, I just get on the roof and sweep of the slides before we bring them in - hasn't been a big deal to me.

PS - Carefree of Colorado used to make one that you could retract independant of the slide, but I just don't see them online anymore. They even broke over the edge of the slide and served as a window awning.

Our 5th wheel came with one, and we like it. We are around a lot of pine trees in Florida an it sure helps keep them of the slide roof.

NuWa on their web site notes that the tension of a retractable slide along the upper edge can cause the seal to leak, see here. Hasn't happened to us, but then central Texas hasn't had much rain in the last couple of years.
The slide awning does seem to keep the extended slide cooler.

Just switched over from HTT to a fifth. The new Jayco 31.5 FBHS has two slides but no slide awnings. I see that they can be purchased after market.
Q- any concerns and issues without them?
and or pro's or cons?

the positives of not having to get up high enough to check/clean the top of the slides before bringing them in, the sun shining on them with a dead air space between them and the slide roof helps to reduce the heat from the sun which must be air conditioned out, and assistance with keeping rain off of the slide roof have been mentioned and they are all true .... an additional positive that we have experienced is not having to get up and clear the top of the slide when it is covered with ice/snow .... we have been able to bring the slide in slowly and use the spring loaded awning roller to eject the ice/snow .... even when the ice is stuck to the point you can't do so, I've been able to use a water hose to quickly loosen the ice to where we can bring the slide in slowly which got ride of the layer of ice .... the negative of a potential flapping noise during high wind is also true .... it most certainly is a personal preference, for us the positives out weigh the negatives and I don't want a camper without them
