A few days ago, I posted a problem I was having with my Onan (gas) generator. It would not start...only got a clicking sound from the starter area. I received a number of recommendations and tried each without success. So, I decided to take it to Camping World and let them solve the problem. On the morning I was to take it to CW, I disconnected from shore power and just before leaving, decided to try the generator one more time. Didn't want to arrive at CW and have the mechanic tell me there's nothing wrong with the gen set. I hit the starter switch and the unit properly turned over and started. I tried it several times and each time it worked perfectly.

I hooked back to shore power and the problem returned...the generator would not turn over. Question: should the gen set turn over and start when hooked to shore power?

Thanks,

Larry

Ours will start when hooked to shore power, but will shut down almost immediatly when it detects no load.

I ALWAYS unplug from shore power before starting the Onan generator.
I don't want to take a chance of the Transfer Switch not working.
At least your generator is working. It saved you a trip to the dealer and associated costs.

Some times I start mine while plugged into shore power. When I do, my GFI protected outlet always trips for some reason; not sure why. I prefer to start mine with the shore power disconnected, but sometimes I forget to unplug.

Hey Larry glad to hear that your problem was also easy to solve. Mine was a little different. My 7.5KW diesel would start and run and had 120volts on each leg at the junction box on the firewall, but no AC voltage to the coach.

Well to make a long story short had to take it up to St Louis for warantee service on the LR slide, let them deal with it. They found one little ground wire that had disconnected and was not allowing the circuit to be completed to the transfer switch. They reconnected that and the coach now has power!

Best thing is they didn't charge me for the work I have been really impressed by the service on a used 2001 rig. They gave a 30 day bumper to bumper and stood behind it. The slide wall was loose at the bottom left of the slide as you are looking at it, they fixed it no charge. They also rebuilt a Power gear jack, Rt front that was leaking.

Anyhoo, glad to hear that you got yours fixed also.

Happy Trails

Chances are that your motorhome will not draw power from the 12V battery when plugged in to shore power, the 12V converter from shore power will not supply enough current to start the generator

Sounds like a built-in safety feature.
