Went back with 5/9 Cav (Air Cav) back in late 80's for body recovery. First flights of US military helicopters since the war. Our mission did not recover any remains but the next mission did.

Last two days in country I spent at Long Ben, however it is spelled.
I hadn't eaten in a day or so. Went to the Mess and they didn't have anything to eat. So tired and it was so hot I couldn't sleep in the barracks. I took a very large beach towel and tried to sleep on the sand.
Dad blamed crabs would race out to the and and bite the snot out of you all over when ever I started to doze.
Got on my flight. No women Stewardesses. Once we lifted off it cooled down and I slept. Missed the food. I believe they served hot dogs.
Stopped in Hawaii and sandwiches were like 4.25 out of a machine. Had only a few cents. next stop was Tokyo.Slept on the way and missed whatever they had to eat. Apparently a lot of GIs had taken a tour of Tokyo, in flights before, instead, of staying in the airport. We were severely warned and there were MPs all over the area to make sure we didn't miss the flight. Still nothing to eat. Got to Ft lewis and they put us through the routine. We were supposed to get a steak after they took an xray. The ones taking the x rays were runing some kind of scam concerning the steaks. They discovered they didn't have film in the apparatus after running us through. If we wanted to get our steak we could go ahead but would have to return and stand in line report for duty doing whatever and redo the xray the next day.
hardly anyone did that and we waited to go through the routine again. Finally after getting new uniforms and pay etc etc got to a mess and gravy and eggs. Got to Seatac and sandwiches were three or four dollars out of a machine. Finally on the flight home I got something to eat. Don't remember what it was but it was delicious.

I was in Jr College and working full time. Graduated Jr College Nov of '68. Signed up for 90 day delayed enlistment in mid Feb to attempt to get choice of MOS and to marry my gal before I left. Two weeks later received my draft notice back at my parents home, the recruiter said pitch them. I received orders in mid April to arrive first of May so that i could make my school date. I just didn't hit the exit button till Sept 1990.

I was in Mrs. Chapman's 5th grade class. She was chunky, had black hair and buck teeth and I thought she was as glamourous as a movie starlet. I was enthralled by "Little House" books, wasn't allowed to watch the news on our B/W tv, loved Barbie and Topo Gigio, wanted to marry Elvis and had a devoted mutt named Poochie. Life was grand and innocent.
