Here is an article and picture of a Walmart in Wilston, ND which is near the oil fields. No wonder some Walmarts are off limits. Wiliston, ND Walmart

I love the guy that complains that it's noisy!
You want your money back, puddin?....
Better complain to the store manager. He'll probably give careful consideration to doing everything possible to make freeloader's stays as comfortable as possible........

This is the typical result when new mining opportunities open up, especially during a severe downturn such as today's.
Walmart managers are allowed to decide the parking policy. Most stores have expected short stays. This store may be trying to assist the entire community in dealing with an influx of new workers. At some point the manager will probably prohibit parking or will develop some way (such as a dated windshield sign) to prevent parkers from staying for long periods.
Of course, with every campsite in that area at a premium, I suspect the private CGs aren't complaining about Walmart competition.

We stayed in that Camp Walmart. Because of the oil boom there were NO RV parks or campgrounds with openings for probably 100 miles. Not many alternatives when you get to the end of the day. A Walmart cashier there told us that they are down by 200 employees because so much money can be made working for the oil companies. Google Williston oil boom and you'll get all kinds of hits with tons of articles about it. Apparently nearby Watford City in 2010 had a population of about 1500 and is now around 5000.

Sounds like a bunch of honest people enduring the elements in order to have a decent-paying job. It'd be too cold for me up there, I would go to south Texas oil patch. It ain't easy, nowhere.

We had some friends who got jobs up in the "patch", bought a big FW and towed it up there to take the jobs. They parked at a friend's house. However, the husband was offered a job around here, Lander, Wyoming, and they sold the trailer in two days and probably made money on it. Now they are back in Lander and he travels about 60 miles one-way to get to his job, but I believe that's better than leaving his home and going up to the "patch" in North Dakota. They didn't say anything about parking in the Walmart parking lot, but did mention the lack of employees at the Walmart store itself.

From what I've seen of ND, campgrounds can be hard to come by. Especially one with a vacancy. We stopped at one in June 07,about 5:30pm they had 1 spot because a pipeliner pulled out about 3pm. Most had been there since the previous winter.

Tough issue. Reminds me of:
•"The migrant people, scuttling for work, scrabbling to live, looked always for pleasure, dug for pleasure, manufactured pleasure, and they were hungry for amusement."
- John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath, Chapter 23
It's the new 1930's. Or so I've been told.

Best of luck to them, especially those who are escaping from unemployment. Sorry 'bout that, to those here who are offended.

Your post -and article- really has nothing to do with WalMart - but *everything* to do with the lack of any kind of housing facilities for the thousands that have arrived in Williston for the jobs available. They're parking and sleeping in cars/SUVs/pickups lots of places!.
WalMart is the only "big box" store (with big lot) in town.
Another article - "The town the recession forgot."
Williston, ND = "Busiest town in America".
BTW - in one of the many articles: WalMart can't keep stock on the shelves it's gone so fast (business is excellent) . . . and needs more employees but can't get them due to the competition.
(even Mickey D's pays $9. an hour - with a $300. signing bonus).
Probably hurts the locals - but if you own a business or property - you're in clover!
So, do you have an axe to grind -or- just trying to stir the pot?.
