Hi,

I am staying in a park in NC at present and thought I would ask if they take on work campers. They said they did so I got an application.
The application is requesting 5 previous employers, and then it says that a 3rd party company will do a background check including a credit check and then there is a form which says "Authorization for the Social Security Administration to release social security number verification" The document also says that a full background check is done and there is about 3 forms to sign just for the background check. Is this normal? Seems alot for 7.50 an hour. Any feedback appreciated. Personnaly I am not filling all this out.

We have been workamping for 6 years, full time and never had a detailed background investigation. They have called previous campgrounds where we worked to see what type of people we are. This is not a high security position and I myself would say "Thanks but no thanks" I don't want all the information about me floating all over" Too many positions/jobs out there that only want to know what type of person you are....team player, friendly personality and flexible to jump in when needed.

Have they asked you pee in a cup yet?

That's about the only thing I think they missed.

Businesses have to protect themselves so background, credit checks are not uncommon and the SSN verification seems normal. Need to be sure person they are hiring is who they say they are, aren't on the lame hiding out and aren't child molesters. Especially where 'employees' will be in direct contact with the public and/or handling transactions.

Of course if one doesn't want to supply requested info then that is still ones choice.
That's why we don't 'workcamp'.....when I retired.....I retired!

I don't see anything the least bit out of the ordinary for a RV park that conducts business properly. Your choices are simple, either complete the forms as requested or you won't get the job.

The BEST places I've been to, espcially including state and federal government run, have always asked me for a lot of info. Since I have nothing to hide nor do I fear that the information I give them will be used against me in any fashion, I provide them with the data.

You must've never been in the military is something like this bothers you! Seriously though, if you feel uncomfortable supplying them with personal info, don't.

A whole lot of cash money passes through an RV park. There is also no audit trail whatsoever generated. An unscrupulous employee could very easily pocket a cash site fee, not check the customer in on the computer and there would be no indication whatsoever they were ever there. Unlike a store there would be no inventory shrinkage to indicate a problem.
Backround search companies are plentiful and cheap. A thorough investigation costs very little. The social security verification is now a federal law. If an applicant balked at a backround check, I would be suspicious enough to not hire them.

Thanks for all the info. This would be our first work camper position so I was unsure of the forms normally reuqired.

With the credit check does anyone know if it puts an inquiry on your credit report? I have good credit but would not want a hit on it everytime it was checked for a position.

I see no problem with doing as they ask. I only need to read the news about all these child molesters/ killers/rapists out there to make a person paranoid. They are doing it to protect not only them selves, but to ensure they provide a safe environment for their guests. Good for them!

If they are not going to give you a 1099 or a W-2 form they don't need your social security information. They also don't need you to sign anything for them to verify your social security information. I would not let a third party have my information because the more hands and eyes that handle and see your information the higher the risk for ID theft.
We have never been asked for a social security number or references other than job history and those were only for state or govenment positions not public parks and to our knowledge they were not used to verify any former positions. I would bet that this park your seeking a position with is a Corporate Park? Because of the continual abuse of the tax codes they have the IRS paying more attention to them.

The more assets held by the RV Park owner/operator - the more they have to lose. I can see an owner feeling they want to be protected.
