Salty Dog wrote: Final destination is Fort Wilderness at Disney. How much shorter is I-81, I-77, I-26? How are road conditions? Kinda like missing DC, Richmond and Lumberton traffic. How is traffic around Charlotte? Heard nasty reports for it but when we visited for the fall Nascar races, it wasn't so bad. Thanks again, Mike
the traffic can be on the heavy side around Charlotte but it is a short run and then it moves ok when you hit the SC border.....I haven't tried the 277 by-pass but it might be better..Chuck

Salty,
Have taken the I81, I77 many times. The best thing of this route is you miss Baltimore and DC. I77 to 26 to 95. We lived in Homer and Cortland for several years from 90 to 06. Owned a home at Rt 41 and 1 Anderson drive north Homer. Then a small house in Cortland on 1 McGregor St. Where do you live?

I did 81 to 77 to 26 to 95 last spring to Florida. Had no problems with road conditions, not sure how much they could deteriorate over the span of a year. The 485 around Charlotte was smooth as glass with no traffic and headache free.

Sorry for the delay returning to the thread. Miles - we live in beautiful downtown King Ferry . We travel to Charlotte for Nascar and the traffic can be heavy for the events. How is it otherwise? How much does using 485 add to the route?

Thanks for the 485 tip. The traffic on I-77 through Charlotte was brutal last March during early rush hour, sort of like the 401 through Toronto!

HELLO. My wife came down in early Oct. 2011 and used 81 to 77,26,95 and 4. A couple things that have not been addressed that may help you decide. Using this route you are always pulling hills. I called a friend and asked if we ever go down the other side. It never seemed to change. Also fuel stops are something you want to plan ahead. Rest areas are futher apart and not as big. We were pulling 40' fiver with duramax1. As far as roads 81 is never good. From there on it's better road than 95. Although 95 is a flatter run with more rest areas, easy fuel stops, but not much to look at. As far as traffic we try to miss rush hour esp. Thru Jacksonville Fl. One fender bender can ruin your timing. Good luck, Travel safe, and Relax and enjoy. Dave.

We stiil prefer I 81 to I66 to route 17 and I95 south. Once you are on 17, no more hills all the way south. LOL
We drove this route last July with a caravan of 10 units and the traffic at the end of 17 was not a problem. A few traffic lights was all.
A friend is driving that section today, leaving from Winchester and heading to Lumberton NC for the night, on his way to lauderdale.
We have driven the 17 section three times in the last 2 years and we never had a problem. We enjoy the scenery on this route with the beautiful horse farms.
When we live in Montreal 15 years ago this was our route south for Easter and we always felt after we passed Pine Grove that winter was finished. LOL

Are you kidding me? It only adds 4km (2.5 miles) to the trip and you avoid going through Charlotte. If anything, that saves time.
