Could be the overflow lot at Van Damne (near Mendocino) or the highway at Westport. I have not been to Westport in several years and the old camping road area may have fallen in the sea by now.
It's not in CA but in southern Oregon, Harris Beach St Park has back in sites with ocean view. Good luck getting one though. Stayed there 2 yrs ago and once in a while check res for something and they allways seem to be booked 6mths out.
Could be Wrights Beach CG north of Bodega Bay? It is on the beach. Last time we stayed there, during a February storm, at high tide some water got into a few of the sites, so you are close to the water.

Thanks but no thanks We stayed there and the campers next to us had a little girl get sucked in to the ocean and was never recovered. So we will not go back.

Which beach or camp are you referring to?
Of all the near water camping on the northern California coast I like Wrights beach the best. It is truly just a stones throw to the water. However, as with most northern California beaches there are warnings about rip tides and that it is not a swim beach. But, for camping, it is great!

as a long time surfer, i've actually rescued children that were allowed by parents/adults to be in ocean conditions that were not safe. if there's no lifeguard, children shouldn't be allowed to be anywhere near the water.
it's incredible how ignorant people can be when it comes to beach/ocean activities.
kind of like those you see in Yellowstone trying to walk up to bears or buffalo or elk, to get close-up pictures.
but as to your OP, the previous places mentioned are about the only ones i can think of that sound like what you're talking about.

Maybe Ocean Cove is what you heard about. I've got a few friends who have stayed there and liked it. We have not yet but hope to this year, we actually took a drive up there a few weeks ago to check it out but they are closed for the season.
