Personally I can't tell the difference in SD and HD. But with that said, there are several channels on Dish Network you can't get unless you have the HD.

I consider it VERY important for large screen TVS and much less important for small screens. You won't see a HUGE difference if you have a 17" screen but if you have a 32 the difference is much more pronounced. Now that being SAID, it may also have a lot to do with how important television is to your RVing plans. OBVIOUSLY you can watch ANYTHING in SD on any sized screen and still enjoy it (remember we ALL did that for 50 or so years) but HD is nice.

My TV is Sony 47 inch HD. I can't tell much difference in regular TV and Hi Def. It's not anything new. I've never been able to tell much difference even in the displays side by side in the stores.

HD is not that big a deal for us but I can see where things are going. As the providers push more and more content to you and the competition gets tighter and tighter, everything will go HD ( do we really need HSN/QVC in HD??? ). So the demand for resources ( bandwidth thus spectrum - every frame of HD contains much more information than the same frame in SD ) will eventually push SD the way of 8 track stereo. The reason most portable dish antennas do not support DTV HD is that DTV moved their HD to a Ka satellite ( high frequency than Ku thus greater available bandwith ). Dishnet stayed in Ku but use multiple satellites and MEPG4.
I know - more information than you really needed

Will it be worthwhile to get HD for my 1955 Black and White Emerson?

Moisheh Would that be the one with the 3-color film over the screen to make it a color tv?

I'm a girl, therefore I do not know or care about the difference HD makes or for that matter the quality of sound coming out of my cheap speakers, I guess those are things men notice. My hubby is always trying to show me how much better the quality is. It is LOST on me! Of course I think TV is only good for two things impending bad weather in strange places and major league baseball games!
But man I sure need a decent coffee maker in my 5th wheel! LOL

I have no desire for HD myself. the plus of HD is that the wrinkles on Jerry Springer are more vivid. the negative of HD is that the wrinkles on Jerry Springer are more vivid.
I just watch SD on my network shows and don't bother going up into the hundreds to find the same channel in HD.

Actually, I would think that as your eyes weaken, the more valuable HD is with its much higher resolution.
