You have heard right. The State park registration is not user friendly. As for 6 months prior for reservations all depends on what park. Ludington I know is one of the hardest ones to get.

Here's a couple pictures of our campsite the last time we camped at Lake Michigan Recreation Area. Just to show how big these sites are. I probably should have told my wife to turn around and smile but she didn't know I was taking pictures.

We stopped to check this place out again on your way up to the casino this weekend. Still can't believe how much land there is. The pads are definitely large. I am wondering, is there a dump station up there since there are no facilities? I assume because there are no showers most people are relying on their trailers water. If not, where do you go to dump. It was crazy, the roads are not maintained in the winter. There was still ice and snow in sections in the shade, and trees down on the paved roads lol. Kind of fun, played rally car driver on our way out with my wife shaking her head at me for making it fun. The Saturn Vue with manual shifting is so much fun. I guess sometimes we find out where men and women are different.

There is a small mom and pops store at the corner of Nurnberg and Quarterline Roads that has a dumping station. There might also be a honey wagon that makes stops at the campground. I believe in the 1st loop of campsites there is flush toilets. With the upcoming weekend weather it sure makes me wish we were camping.

So this place just lets you stop by and dump your woo hoo for free? lol. I am pretty sure I drove right past that before my rally race back into the campground Man, I can't wait to go back there. It appears there are tons of bike trails. Is there a map out there that shows where they go? Thanks for the info man, you are a big help!

I don't think it is free but only a couple of dollars. They also have showers you can use for a small fee of like $2.00. When your searching for trails make sure to put Nordhouse Dunes into your search. They are connected with Lake Michigan Recreation Area and ranked some of the best Hiking in Michigan.

Also I should tell you is if you are walking south along the beach about 1 mile you might encounter nude sunbathers. It is a nice secluded area for some of us......I mean some people lol.
