Why mention what happens in other countries. The fact that some workers in Canada may be underpaid does not change what is happening in Mexico. If you want to discuss the plight of Canadian workers try some organized labour website. Or the Communist Party of Canada. One should not paint all of Canada with one brush. Workers in Manitoba are not paid less than the minimum wage. Probably the same in Saskatchewan and all the other left leaning Provinces. The Americans on this forum would die if they knew all the labour laws that abound in Canada.

Eliminate minimum wage and everyone will receive a decent wage. Milton Friedman recommended this forty years ago. Still holds true today and in any country.

Everything else aside, it is a cool website and news source. Beats the heck out of eluniversal which I found is frustrating to navigate. Thanks for posting.

Indeed, the issue of a decent wage has started many riots around the world, before and after enactment of minimum wage laws and the organization of labor.
(But I do very much agree the subject of labor equality and decent wages in any country, including Mexico, is best left to another forum.)

If that is true and I would not be doubting it.. My be one of the reasons I have always tipped the service persons in Mexico. Perhaps maybe to make sure the right fuel was pumped or to just be a nice guy. Because the very little I have been there, Their poverty level is far beyond anything in the states.
Most of the working people live in very( to us ) crude homes. The Canadians and North Americans have run the inflation to an extremism that is so hard for the average Mexican to bear, they need help.
The government there is a graft infested bunch and unless you are a mayor or above in a village you are a peon. Our government has not helped by doing more harm than good.

I believe that a couple of years ago, several of the regulars on this form were saying that Pemex workers were very well paid, and to tip them was not necessary. I'm not going to go to the trouble to look those posts up however. I usually tip 5 or 10 pesos, as I usually only get 50 liters of diesel at a time as I prefer to keep the top half full.

Stan, I was one of those. I stand by it, not saying that the article is way off. There are shiesters(?) everywhere. What I said referred to the corporation as a whole but did include despachadores. I still stand by it.
The day they nationalized Pemex, it was the beginning of the end in Mexico. I could go on, but that would be another thread too!

You just mentioned New York ,I believe that is in the U.S.???? By the way what century/decade sweat shops do you mean?
I have a Mexican national friend here and his cousin comes by and visits, he works at the local Pemex. I will see what info I can get.

Iguana: I should have expanded that post. I was referring to the shops where immigrants are forced to work for nothing. Highly illegal and they really are slaves. But unusual in Canada and the USA. Nor does it make what was reported any different. Stan: In most areas the Pemex workers ARE paid well. This story was about workers in one region. Many of the Pemex workers are very unionized and I think I did mention that fact. Refinery workers have one of the strongest unions in N.A. They have contracts that state what jobs each worker can do. If a job is eliminated for any reason ( plant is old and shut down, new machinery eliminates a job) they are not required to do any retraining or work in another plant. These workers simply stay home and receive full wages. Pemex plant workers are famous for being DEAD and the paychecks still are sent out and somehow cashed. More like criminals(dead or alive) than union members.
Pemex stations are sometimes Company owned and some are franchises. The wages are different for each type. I have my favorite station and always tip the attendant. Many Mexicans do not tip but that article stated that in the Mexico City region tipping is commonplace.
