I think we are talking about "how much does the average mexican family need and those that are successful, make to keep a family?
The wage for the guy that got the nails for me today at the Ferreteria makes 100 pesos a day- do you tip the guy at the Ferreteria?
the comment that the locals tip Pemex attendants high I believe is bogus in my opinion- Unfortunately , I have experienced many of us who say- I dont tip the Oregon gas attendant so why should I do it down here.
So many of us do not embrace this culture- come down here for years and learn no spanish- complain when get a meal at a recent magic cultural event here in melaque- because they only went there to complain about the poor meal for 150 pesos- drink included.
They did not notice the "one armed paper hanger" Pedro making this happen and provide us a magical cultural experience-- SORRY I got of the topic of the thread but I wanted to vent.

It is an interesting discussion. The average salary of a Mexican is about $ 350 U.S. dollars a month ... If you visit Mexico, when you ask people how much money they get for their work. This is the reason why I give a tip, not less than 10 pesos. If I go with my car in a supermarket, then I'll leave it for a tip guard or wash the car. But always ask for the price. All this will cost me not more than more than $ 100 for 3 months and I'm not a gringo ...
Is it not the same as you do in the States, with a 1-dollar bill?

OK, I finally ran into my friends cousin, Benito. He is a full time employee at the local Pemex here on the 200 at the entrance to the road to Troncones.
He laughed when I asked him if he made $200.00 pesos a day. He said he does not work on commison. He states he is paid $76.00 a day for 8 hours work and the occasional tip! I asked him if the locals or Mexican nationals tip and he said NO. But he does count on tips to help his wages.
In the 2 months I have been here I have not seen any tourist at this Pemex when we have gone in for fuel.
He says that each Pemex is individually owned. The owner of his, has 8 others in the Ixtapa/Z area. He works for a supervisor/manager of the gasolinera and manager reports his hours worked to a secretary in Z who cuts their checks.
Almost sounds like a franchise???
He told me that he also gets a yearly bonus of $1,000 to$15000 which is not guaranteed but he has always received.
He is not sure what wages are paid in other gasolineras but there is no fixed wage.
I did forget to ask about what taxes or uniform costs might be and what social benefits he receives, but if i run into him again I will.

I asked too, here in our town of Santiago we have four gas stations, as you said, each franchise individually owned and operated. As Mexican law states, each employee receives Christmas bonus (aguinaldo), vacation, profit sharing (utilidades), IMSS (social medicine for the employee, spouse, children and any family dependent) and two of the four stations the employee receives food coupons (dispensa). Pay in this area is 800 to 1000 pesos per week.
They receive tips for filling tires and washing windows. (If they check all four tires I give them 5 pesos, no tip for window washing).

When I first read the story of paying to work it was in our daily newspaper. El Imparcial. One story was the one I linked but there was also a more complete article. I could find it in the online version of El Imparcial but you cannot link or copy it! There were quotes from a Syndicato rep. who stated that they did complain to all levels of Government but to no avail. The article also mentioned that this practice was happening in "the valley". I assume that means in the Mexico City area. Reforma is the paper that wrote this story. They are the largest newspaper chain in Mexico with 1.4 million readers. Reforma is also a wire service and that story was in at least 10 other papers. Reforma is not one of those rags with pictures of J lo's butt or articles on Chupacabras. It is a respected paper and I am confident that the editor verified the info in that article. BUT: As evidenced by Chris's and Iguana's posts this does not happen all over Mexico. In Hermosillo there are unionized Pemex's where they not only get a good salary they also receive a "grocery cheque" every month. I think it is over $100 and I see them being spent at Super's. Other Companies also have this food stamp practice. In small towns like Kino the employeees get very small salaries. The young man that works for me is married to a Pemex jockey. I will ask him how much she is paid. The locals in our town never tip. Nor do many of the Gringos.

Here is the pay for a Pemex jockey in one small town. 1500 pesos every 15 days. no Union. 100 peso increase very year. hours are 7:30 to 5 pm , 6 days a week. I will ask my friend in Hermosillo about his wages but I know it is substantial. Mexico is a country of contrasts.

Talked to the albaniles who are building a wall next to us. They work for the general contractor who bid the job.
There are 5 of them working they make from $190.00 to $210.00 a day for 9 hrs work 6 days a week. I told them what the Pemex employee made and they said they make a more because they have a skill and can be out of work for long periods of time.

Iguana: I assume that is in pesos?? The Albanils make between $200 and $300 pesos a day in most of Sonora. Once in a while a Maestro will make more. Although they are covered by IMSS it is not unusual fo the contractor to lay them off in Novemeber and not pay Aguinaldo. Clearly illegal but that does not stop this practice. Unfortunatley worker's right's are often not protected. As an example of contrasts. Today the water dept. in Hermosillo settled for a new contract. They get a 5.5% increase. This union goes on strike about 3 times a year. They usually ask for a 35% increase! When they go back to work they get all their back pay, a signing bonus and the union gets a huge check. Thousands of dollars. The workers get: free loans, scholarships for their kids, assistance for sport teams and free funerals. I think I want to work for the water dept.!
