Hi folks, ive gotten around to buying an inverter and im in the process of installing it and have mounted it under the dinnette seat which is also shared by the water pump . My main obstacle is tapping into the main cable from the house battery . It runs directly under the floor from under the hood (class c E350 ford) to the generator on the passenger rear side. I need to cut the positive cable and make a tap into it. There is no slack in the cable so im looking into getting a 2 lug junction block type thing and cutting and putting lug ends on and running the inverter pos. cable thru the floor and bolt it to one of the lugs . I dont see an easier way, does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts? thanks

What about the negative? I guess you're ok with a small draw, but a larger one usually needs a direct connection.

How close is this to the Batt. I've always heard you want to keep the inverter as close to the batt's as posable and make the long run with the 120 volt wiring.

This is the best way, by far.

What is the capacity of the inverter and what is going to be connected??

I think you need to rethink your install unless you are within two feet of the batteries. Move the inverter to a place as close to the battery as possible.

the inverter would be around 8 ft from the battery if i mount it under the dinnette, the battery along with the chassis battery are both mounted under the hood on either side of the radiator so theres not anyplace thats real close to mount the inverter.
as far as the negative cable i was going to just run that cable to the chassis . the inverter is a 1000 watt.

Hi fltioga89,

8 feet and 120 amps when the inverter is running flat out. This is a bad idea. Here is why.

Solution:
1 conductor(s) per phase utilizing a 1/0 kcmil Copper conductor will limit the voltage drop to 1.98% or less when supplying 120 amps for 8 feet on a 12.6 volt system.

Be very watchful of that connection when operating a heavy load. Lots of amps going thru there.

When I wired in my inverter I tapped into the battery wire with a copper split bolt connector, that way I did not have to cut into batt. cable and mess with installing lugs.

Good Luck, Kevin

I know just enough about electric to be dangerous, so I will defer if I am wrong.
But why not mount the inverter much closer to the battery (not in the battery compartment cause you don't want spark there) and run romex to where ever you want your outlet to be?
