I Have a problem with my hot water heater it auto lights then continues to click off and on for about 1 min. After about two min that flame goes out and it tries to re-light when it finally lights it has a loud pop from the build up of gas. Anyone have any ideas.

Clean the burner and spark units plus the vent to the roof.

it may be the air adjustment. mine did that and i adjusted it and it has been fine since. it was letting too much air in and was blowing the flame out. it is simple to do

Any signs of sooting?
What does flame look like?
Does it always do this.....or just first time after not being used for awhile?
What year/make/model of 'water heater'?

Could be dirty burner/flue tube
Could be air adjustment
Could be dirty flame sensor
Could be misaligned burner tube

Sorry I can't help myself....
I have a problem with hot water heaters also.
Who in their right mind wants to heat hot water? it is already hot!
Perhaps you have a problem with your water heater?
Might need to hook it up to a hose pipe

Once it lights then ok until it tries to light again and then it overloads and pops again. There is some sooting after it pops.

those water heaters need a ground wire installed between the ground terminal on the gas valve and the screw mounting the ignitor at the burner...poor ground screws up the system. Also...there are 2- 1/4" hex head screws located in the upper right hand corner looking from the outside. This is the point the ground connection is made from the module inside and the frame....loosen and retighten each screw....can have a poor ground here also. This has fixed many a problem on several campers for me

Along with Master Biscuits advice, I suggest getting some carburetor spray cleaner and washing down the flame sensor and burner area. This stuff will melt carbon and often will solve these kinds of issues and if it doesn't, at least it's all good and clean.

I think this stuff is flamable so make sure power and gas are shut off before using.

Just saying...
