When I had mine (Garmin 265WT)set to Holland State Park it wanted me to go to the alley behind the park CG where they pick up the garbage. Later while I was sitting near the beach looking out at Lake Michigan it wanted me to continue another 500 yards and turn right. I don't swim so I was not going out on Lake Michigan in the storm either. I use mine mostly for the Bluetooth on the phone for hands free.

Hi All.
Well, we can't help you out with your GPS Issues. But here is what we do. Remember this is over quite a few years. We have a 3.5 inch TOM-TOM ONE GPS System that we use to use all the time. Now we just keep it in our Toad, so we don't have to keep moving it, like we did in the past. We also bought a 5 inch TOM-TOM XXL GPS System for our Motorhome. What an improvment over the 3.5 inch GPS System, a much better size screen to see, plus newer map sofeware. Also, for many years now, we have useing the "DeLorme GPS System" on our Laptop also. Right now we are using an HP 17 inch screen Laptop with the DeLorme GPS System installed on the Laptop. Every few years I up-grade the DeLorme GPS Program for only about $29.00 dollars when on sale. So far we have never been lost or have ever been taken down any wrong roads. We even used the old TOM-TOM ONE for quite a few years when we towed our 5er, with our PSD Truck. The Laptop fit very nicely on the Transmission Hump on a one step stool. It also sits very nicely on the Dog-House Cover in our Motorhome. You just can't beat the view on a 17 inch Laptop GPS System. Its also great to just have the Laptop with us for other things also. A good way to stay in touch while traveling, with WiFi or a Cell Phone Connection. Great for looking up information in new areas your in, or to make reservations. You can also watch DVD's with it. We also carry an All-In-One Printer with us also. So we can print out things we want. Having a Laptop replaces a lot of the old way of carrying all the different books and Maps needed for traveling. There is a learning curve with any GPS System. That link that was posted above should help you out some. Good Luck. Happy Travels. Dan & Jill

We don't plan on getting rid of the GPS, aka Gloria, because at least 90% of the time she keeps us on track and saves us a lot of arguments about what to do next. I guess basically what I am hearing is that I have to do more back up work. Thanks for taking the time to offer your points of view and suggestions. I now have some ideas on how to handle the problem.

I agree and offer the same complaint about our GPS (RVND 5510). While MapQuest, Google maps, and pretty much any free map service on line offers multiple routes that you can select and drag and drop options, it baffles me why GPS' do not. One route. Period, take it or leave it. You can force a route by continually ignoring the voice who recalculates approximately every 2.5 seconds and constantly tries to get you to u turn, by going where you want to go and eventually it catches on, or add via points along the route. Either that or I just don't program it until I am far enough into my route for it to go the way I want. But why should I have to do all that after spending hundreds when other programs do it for free? Just offer me at least one other route option for crying out loud. It's not like it can't be done pretty easily.

X - 2!!! I do my routing, the routes I want, on Streets & Trips and then transfer them to my Garmin. Once in a while I'll get on a new road that isn't on the latest maps update, so the Garmin thing I going through a cow pasture, but thats okay cause I know where I'm going!!!

As you can see from others' posts...a GPS can be a handy tool at times but is never 100% accurate or reliable in all situations. Like other folks we often back up any GPS route proposal with a paper map!
We use Co-Pilot on the laptop for our GPS and have tried Delorme Streets. Both work well but again not 100% perfect. We've been given many bad directions with those program too, asking us to turn into a ranchers pastures, always wanting us to turn around...Usually we map our own route and see if the GPS can keep up with us! Usually it will get back on track after you've made a detour from the designed course of travel but it is indeed aggrivating!
I read a poster's remarks about how to trick their GPS into doing what was needed...egads I'd give up and throw it out the window!
As another poster suggested--these new fanngled things are highly overrated yet we all just keep trying to make them work. Given the fact -- according to a pro we talked to said--the software is never and can never be 100% up to date all the time. After all, to expect a program to know every road in the world is a bit unrealistic. We've come across changes to roads that have been in existance for 5 years that still are not on a GPS program.
Never throw away our paper maps!

I recently purchased the Rand McNally Tripmaker model 7710. It is specifically made for RV usage. You program in your Rv specs. and it will keep you off of roads you do not wish to be on. It also has a city to city function where you do not need to use specific addresses. Real time construction areas are also highlighted. Camping World has it for about $350.
