The beauty of building a box out of 2x4s and plywood is you end up with a 3-1/2" high "basement" for storing stuff. Fishing poles, ladder, hoses, the tow strap, tools.... The possibilities are ENDLESS!
2x4 on edge is about 3-3/8" plus 23/32" (what they call 3/4") ply is about 4".

its a good idea to use the space created----------but if your camper drops over the back of your truck bed-----like ours-----how would you access it ? (without removing the camper)

I used 2X4's with 1/2 plywood and topped it off with a 3/4 rubber stall mat from TSC. That made close to 3". Worked great for me.

We used 2x4s on their sides, not edges, and 3/4 plywood on that with a rubber mat on top. We have a spray on bed liner and the camper still moved around some.
so we added a strip of rubber ( baler belts )to the 2x4s that run the length of the bed and that ended that.
I just went out and measured it. It raises the camper 2 3/4 inches and clears the roof clearance lights by slightly more than 1 inch.
