HI,

What can anyone tell me about the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument & the surrounding area? We plan to be there mid-April-ish. We pull a 38' FW and know there are some national forest campgrounds nearby that we should fit as well as some nice hiking. So a few questions:
1. Is this area interesting?
2. Anyone with a big rig have any advice on campgrounds?
3. Anyone know if Verizon data is available in the area? Or another form of WiFi?

Any other advice is always appreciated.

Thanks!

Happy Travels!

Since you will be in the area anyway I highly recommend a stop at City of Rocks State Park. It is 24 miles north of Demming. The best camping is up in the sites scattered among the rock formations but they have an area with full hook ups for large rigs like yours. You will want to make reservations, Google the park and give them a call. This place is amazing!

Yeah 15 had a 24 foot length limit on it when we went up. It has some sharp switch backs. I don't think I checked my cell phone up there but I'd be surprised if you have any sort of signal, or services up there. Ditto on the City of Rocks, camp there or in Silver city and drive your TV up to Gila Cliffs. You cross the continental divide on 15.

WE toured that area in our tow vehicle from a nice cg in Silver City but it was so long ago I have lost the name of that cg! That whole area is great for exploring.

We toured the area from a nice cg in Las Cruces. It is called La Hacienda and it's very near to old mesilla.

We stayed at a KOA in Silver City. Easy day trip to Dwellings from there. Check out the Copper Mine near Silver City.

I would camp in or near Silver City and use that as home base to see the area. Lots to see and do in and around Silver City. I would NOT try to pull a large camper to the Cliff Dwellings. Also remember that the Cliff Dwelling are next to the Gila Wilderness so exploring the area outside the NM will require hiking or by horse back. Check the Silver City Chamber of Commerce and the Gile NF office for detailed info about the area. Enjoy your trip.

We stay in Silver City and drive up. It is quite a road driving up there; well paved but LOTS of curves - some very tight - and some hills. You will want to stop in Pinos Altos and look around a little going thru.

We have stayed both at the KOA and Rose Valley and both are ok.

The Gila Cliff Dwellings are worth the drive.

And if you get up Hwy 180 near Glenwood you should do the Catwalk. Interesting easy hike that can be expanded if you like.

Enjoy!
