Can anyone recommend a good campground near Winnemucca for an overnight? We preffer public but the one we stayed at last time, Rye Patch, does not have electric and during summer don't like to use the gen set to run the A/C all the time so guess we'll go with a private Park this time. Any suggestions woukd be appreciated.

I am going to assume you are talking about Winnemecca, Nevada, where we overnighted a couple years ago and will do again in August. I think we stayed at the High Desert RV Park. It was very basic, but a good place to spend the night. However, you mention Rye Patch so I wonder if we are talking about the same place.

Yes, same Winnemucca. Rye Patch is a resorvoir West of town and North of I-80

We stayed at High Desert Campground. We had a pullthrough and didn't have to unhook the toad. But I did have to use a long sewer hose. I would stay there again. I don't remember any real negatives...except the weather was HOT that August night. ACs did a good job.

Thanks - Looks like High Desert is the place. Also looking at taking HW 50 but campgounds choices are even fewer on thta route, but Great Basin is a Great Basin NP is a realo draw to us.

We much prefer US 50 across Nevada. We probably go that way six or eight times for every time we go I-80. Great Basin NP is a real hidden gem in the desert. For an overnighter, our preferred CG is Cave Lake State Park, just outside of Ely. No hookups, but nice private showers and flush toilets. It is at 7300' (about the same elevation as the Lehman CG's in GBNP) and in the hills, so it's quite a bit more comfortable than Rye Patch at 4200' in the "flats". Plus, you're right by a lake in the middle of the desert. Do a Google image search to see what this CG looks like. It is full of locals on weekends but fairly empty on weekdays. It's closer to US 50 than GBNP, so a real time saver if it's just an overnight stop.
