I just bought my TT yesterday 1999 Cameo by carriage 26' which was sitting unused for 2+years. it was hooked into 110v power for that time. I think the batteries are shot. . .
should I replace with 6v golf cart batteries? I hear they are the best. how much can I expect to pay for those? can I pick them up at camping world or walmart?
I live in Portland Oregon
Two 6 volt golf cart batteries is a good way to go, I might do it someday, but keep in mind that they're probably bigger than what you have now, which is probably Group 24. This means you'll have to do some mods to your trays and get larger boxes. Not a huge deal, but be aware.

If you are going to be purchasing new batteries, it would be best to also change out the old converter with a new 3 stage converter. It is very easy to do and it will make your batteries last longer.
For batteries, try Randy at www.bestconverter.com.
They sell Lifeline and Universal. The Universal batteries ship for free.

Consider Interstate batteries. Not the cheapest but I got just over 7 years on a pair of 12 volt engine batteries for my DP. They make a very good product. But their NASCAR driver is terrible

I saw 6 volt golf cart batteries at Costco in Palm Springs the other day. $73.99 If I were looking that where I would go.

Not all 6v have the same AH though. US battery has a 232ah, but also a 216ah and a 208ah. Rebranded 6v going for low prices could well be the lower AH ones. Still a good price.

I purchased 4 Trojan T-105s (6 Volt) for the lowest price I could find at Northwest Battery in Portland. In my case I didn't have any core trades and wasn't penalized. They carry other brands as well. Good luck on your search!

There are basically three types of batteries that work well with a trailer, depending on your needs. If you always have hookups, just get an RV/marine hybrid battery from Walmart. They are cheap.
If you want to do boondocking, then use either the golf cart or the AGM. Each has their advantages and disadvantages. Both if properly cared for will last a long time.
The golf cart batteries have a lot of amps in them and are less expensive, but require the adding of DISTILLED water to maintain the water levels. They will self discharge at a higher rate than AGMs. They have a higher internal resistance than the AGMs and have to be mounted upright. If installed inside, they have to be in vented battery boxes. They require periodic equalization charges. They can freeze in cold weather when discharged.
The AGMs are more expensive. They are an all position battery and can be used indoors without special boxes as long as they are not charged above a certain voltage (this is why OSHA allows their use in UPS units). They have very low internal resistance and their self discharge rate is low. They bulk charge fast. To optimize their life, you really should have a smart charger with an AGM setting and a temperature sensor. They will not freeze when discharged and won't be damaged by traveling on rough roads when discharged. They are sealed, and you don't need to add water to them.

I'm glad I found this thread. I purchased my trailer used last summer. The batteries (2 12v) have never held a charge. I am heading out this weekend and will be dry camping so I'm going to replace the batteries.
Looks like I ought to go with two 6v batteries instead of the two 12 volts, or do I need to get 4 6 volts to replace the 2 12 volts? Also, I'm guessing that I need to connect the 6v batteries differently than the 12 volts have been. Is that right?
To give you a better idea of how I use my trailer . . . it's mostly dry camping. We have a place in the mountains and when the weather gets good I'll take the trailer up there and leave it for most of the summer. We might haul it to a few places during the summer, but mostly it serves as a surrogate for a cabin. It would be great if I could count on the batteries holding a charge for a couple of weeks between visits from me. When I go up, I can run the generator to top off the charge when necessary. I also have a single 15 watt solar panel charger. Maybe I need more than that if the refrigerator will be running (on propane) in our absence.
You guys are great. I appreciate your knowledge. Thanks in advance for sharing.
