A friend of mine has a order in his tank that he can't seem to get rid of. After every camping trip he flushes his black tank until it runs clear. He has put ice inside of it and drove around trying to break loose anything that may be stuck. He says the funny thing is that when he flushes the toilet that he doesn't smell any odor coming up through the toilet - but the smell is coming from somewhere. I said well let's go to the experts - so any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

So he's getting a black tank smell in the rig but he does not smell it when he flushes the toilet.

Does he smell it just after he flushes the tank??
Then he needs to put water into the traps after he dumps/flushes the tank. The suction of the dumping is pulling the water out of the traps. (Bathroom sink is usually plumbed to the black tank. Put some water in the sink... then dump/flush...then let the water out of the sink.

Might check the toilet seal, mine went bad in our last camper. The rv dealer that i bought the seal from said it was a waste of time they never go bad, well guess what it was bad. Also have him fill the tank ad chem and let it sit as long as possable maybe it will soften something up and flush out. I always dump about 5 gallons in after i dump before we leave the campground, keeps anything from sticking and has alittle water in it for the next time we camp.

Check out the below web site about the check valve under the sink.

Check valves on the vent lines under the bathroom and/or kitchen sinks ate likely suspects. Replacements are available at Lowes or HD.

The grey tank can smell almost as bad as the black if kitchen waste or grease sticks to the sides and then starts to go rancid.

Make sure the roof vents are clear and connected to the tank. Take the covers off run a hose down them try to lift the pipe up or wiggle it. Are the rain covers blocklng or restricting the vents.

What these guys said, a common but unknown because the valves are usually very well hidden. Look up under the sinks by the back... they are there! They usually just unscrew. The roof vent mod won't solve the problem.

Grey tanks smell bad also. Any tank has a vent that leaks below or in the walls will cause this.
