does the rope light around the mat give off enough light to see, like for eating and such

No. Keep you from tripping over chairs, etc but not enough to cook by or eat by.

I have (but quit using) the six hanging globes from CW with 60W bulbs and made a dimmer in a 4X junction box so I could turn them up and down depending on the circumstance. I retire those as they too too long to put up and took up too much storage space.

I found a big globe light that is designed to go on top of a pole as a yard light. Made it into a hanging light that I hang off one end of the awning and plugs into said dimmer. I put a 150W bulb in it which lights the places up like daylight when I need it and can be dimmed to Frank Sinatra levels for drinks and talking. Much smaller to store. QUITE happy with it as it goes up and down in a flash, provides enough light and looks good like me.
Did you hang thr light upsidedown (as to how it would be on a post) if so is it water tight?or able to withstand rain?

It is hung upside down. I made a top for it with a piece of nylon cutting board from the Dollar Store, bought a strain relief grommet from ACE Hardware, sealed it up with RTV and it is weather proof.

I hang it with S hooks I crimped onto the cord at the pertinent places.

Here's the mod I did. Five LED lights permanently mounted into the awning cover. Wired into the middle porch light. Give off enough light to eat, play cards, etc. yet does not extend the ambient light into the neighbors area. Whatever you choose remember the courtesy code is to turn out ALL exterior lighting between the hours of 10PM-8AM, unless you're actively using them.....Dennis

Tom, I use clear rope lights around my coach 24/7/365! I use a smaller rope light 3/8" with standard light. You can get a larger diameter rope light 1/2" which makes for more light, or you can go with LED rope lights which are brighter. You can also go with different colors. I bought mine at Home Depot they have more selection. I have a 36' coach so I bought a 48' strand and a 24' strand and was able to string them around my coach. I use my lights for rodent control. We use the LED strip lights that are in an enclossure of some sort. Son installed them on one side of the coach. There turned on by a rocker switch in the bay. They don't put off enough light underneath to bother anyone, but do light up the area enough under the coach to see outside if you need to be out there at night walking around. Not sure where he got them, but they've been up for two years with no problems. Took him about 3 hours to do the entire install a few years back for us, he did a great job.

We took a different approach, as our awning is an electric one, so you can't get it close enough to the ground to hang hooks/lights, etc.
I bought 3 pieces of threaded black iron 1" pipe, which were about $3 ea at the local hardware store, along with the 1" couplers to gang them together. Bought a metal 4 way work box, mounted to the end of the pipe, and bought a 2-light cheap flood light fixture for $10. Another "cheap" 25' extension cord with the end cut off to wire to the floodlight fixture.
Takes maybe 2 minutes to screw the pipe sections together, put 3-4 tiewraps around the ext cord to keep it wrapped on the pipe, and I plug the cord into a $10 remote controlled outlet. I stand it up beside my passenger side mirror, and attach it with two velcro strips wrapped around the pipe and the mirror.
When we come back to the camper and it's dark, one click of the remote and we have nice lighting that's up above the coach so no "blinding" effect. With 60watt bulbs, it's a soft light. I point one out a bit towards where our car would be parked, and the other along side of the coach so it gets the front steps and picnic table. The whole thing breaks down quickly and stows easily.

One advantage to using LED lighting at night is that LED light does not attract bugs. We use it on all of our outdoor lighting with the MH and our stick house.

There was a warning recently in, perhaps, one of he RV magazines about using ropes lights on the ground. Seems this could be a problem with lightning in the area, providing a direct conduit from the ground into the coach. Don't understand enough about how this could happen - maybe someone else who does read the same warning and could provide insight.
