So I was coming driving home from sandlake near pacific city oregon on our coast.Well it started snowing and snowing hard by the time we all hit the pass there was 6" plus. We get over the top of the pass we all slow to 5 to 10 mph. About a half ml ahead a car hits there brakes and started a ball up. I get the rig pulled down to afull stop and so does everyone else. Al of are every which way in the road but we got stoped. I turned off my truck put my park brake on to get out and help get people headed down the hill.open truck door start to step out and my truck and trailer are leaving without me with the door shut, oh going sideways, I run and jumped in the truck which the truck and trailer are already jack knifing i get it started and under way. Well it was to late just about got it around and bang hit a van that was sideways in the road with the last 3 feet of the trailer and I was telling people that I will meet them at the bottom. wow

Hi,

Same thing happened to me at the Grand Canyon in November 1987. I was driving on ice, thinking "It is the desert - it should be warm!"

Stopped in the parking lot at the Grand Canyon lodge, and the warm tires started melting the ice under the tire, and I started to slide - with the brakes on, lucky me I noticed while still in the truck with it running, and I let off the brakes moved to a better location, now the tires cooler, and they did not melt any more ice from under the tires. Parked in a level area, so no tragic incident to report to the insurance company.

On the way back to Williams, some idiot was passing anyone, and then about 10 cars in front of use all the cars stopped sort of suddenly, and this guy was in a snowbank on the right side of the road. My guess is he passed someone, got back into the right lane to quickly, and went straight into the ditch!

My guess is the tires heated up the ice under the snow covered road, and you started sliding once the ties melted a little water. The trailer was pushing you down the hill too, that can not help, with it's brakes off.

I hope you did not do to much damage!

Fred.

Oh, man...I know exactly how you must feel. I had something similar happen years ago.

I've carried chains ever since for both trailer and tow vehicle, and use them regularly.

Your trailer brakes were helping to keep your rig in place.

I was dropping off at the butcher with our stock trailer and while backing down to the the chute I went to get out to check my postition. The moment I took my foot off the brakes the entire rig started to slide down towards the chute and barn. I dropped it into 1st a spun my way up and out of the chute.

Sorry for your accident. When you got out of the truck the trailer brakes were released. Until then they were helping keep you in place. It likely still would have happened with chains on because of the weight of the TT pushing the truck. Something for all of us to remember in the future. I for one never really thought about it before.

What a scary situation!

Just for the purpose of me learning new things and since I too live in Oregon and occasionally drive the passes here and into California, what would have been a good preventative solution for this? Obviously it was too late to chain and not safe to do so. That pass is dangerous enough without snow and/or pulling a trailer. Would you have the passenger jump out and block the tires? What would you/or could you have done differently? Just curious and glad everyone got out ok.

We just drove past Pacific City on our way up the coast for home. Did this just happen? Which pass? We had heard there was a possibility of snow. Hope the damage was minimal and good to hear there were no injuries. Must have been scarey.......Mike
