My cruiser has a factory installed 2" reciever under the bumper rated at 500 lbs. Recently bought a Rhodgear 2 bike rack for $65 with no shipping at Amazon.
I think eventually tho that I will do the pinbox thing.

You've all been very helpful and we appreciate the time you took to address our problem. Several good ideas. Looking at the rear carrier though because as good as the pin box hitch looks to work, we have a shroud over ours and I like it. It would have to be removed. Any more suggestions though, please feel free to submit. We're still open.

Here is my hitch setup. The shop replaced the tubes that were holding the bumper then welded the 2" receiver tubes to the new framework. I have used the Thule bike rack for years - it is a pricey but very well built unit. The bikes are very secure and mount in just a few seconds.

This is a very nice setup and I like the idea of the Thule bike rack.
Our system (with the square tubes) is the same but with the single receiver and the hanging type bike rack it is not as simple as this.
This is a great and safe system that you have.

Why not just cut out a hole in the shroud. You can remove it,weld a tube straight up,reinstall the shroud, weld the receiver on the tube and your done.

I would be afraid to use one. It still puts a lot of torque on bumper.

I used one for part of a trip - as soon as I noticed my bikes were leaning away from the back of the trailer I took them off and moved them inside the trailer. The bumber was caving in at the welds as a result of the downward torque created by minor bouncing. The shop that installed my 2" receiver put larger backing plates on the bumper to fix the problem. A bumper made of heavier gauge metal might work but I would guess they are all pretty similar.

If you moved the spare tire to bed of the TW; it should not add any stress 2 bikes with rack should wieght about the same as the spare.
