Two days ago my wife was shopping in Walmart and had her cart hijacked. A young woman, early 30's, dumped her stuff on a shelf, kept two of the bags of bird seeds, and just used the cart as her own. My wife, who just had both knees replaced, doesn't walk so good, came back the adjacent aisle and caught her with the cart next to our stuff stacked on a nearby shelf. Her excuse was, "Well I asked loudly if anyone was using this cart and no one answered". Guess the stack of items in the cart meant nothing to her.

It hurt my wife's feelings and she had to go to the front and get another cart and retrieve her stuff. Nothing was paid for, so no lost money, but "GOOD LORD, how narcissistic can these young people be?".

I told the wife to consider the funny side. Just imagine when this 30 something hijacks the cart of another self centered 30 something. Boy what a fight that will be!

What goes around usually comes back around. Me, I would have been more forceful and have taken the cart back.

The problem is, the baby boomers that are retiring today are the one's who raised these people and taught them the manners they display. These same baby boomers are also starting to display their behavior in public places, like camp grounds and that is a good reflection as to why their children act the way they do today....

Our generation was taught to not make a scene or get into a public fight, so she just let her have it after it was obvious she would not give the cart back. I can forsee more public fights, shootings and stabbings over small things in our future.

Amazing! One person (or even a few people) acts like a complete idiot, and an entire class or generation of people are indicted for it!
I simply don't see the types of problems often reported on these forums, where I live, except, of course, for the bratty children who should be taken home and sat in a corner.
IMO, there has always been a certain percentage of society who were ill prepared to live with other people. I think that percentage has remained fairly constant over the years, but as the population has increased the number of those has increased as well. 10% (to pick a number out of the air) of a billion is a LOT more people than 10% of a million!

You live in a sparsely populated area and a sheltered life. Come out into civilization once in awhile and you will see it is more common today than you think.

Wow, that's so sad. I'm in my early 30's and I don't know anybody my age who would do this to another person.

I've observed ever since I was old enough to pay attention to people that it's very common for older folks to claim the younger generation is ruining the world, headed to you-know-where, etc. My grandparents did it, my parents did it and yes, I've been tempted. Maybe it's a natural part of mental and emotional aging. Perhaps our perceptions change or we tend to focus more on the bad stuff as we age.

But in truth I doubt peoples' behavior overall is any worse today than it was when I or anyone else on this forum was a young 'un, and I know for a fact there are many young people nowadays doing all sorts of good things.

But I'm sorry your wife had to deal with this. No doubt about it, that one individual's behavior was completely wrong and very much all about herself.

Y'know, Texan, I don't just stay in Montana! I actually DO travel around a little bit; Seattle, Bremerton, Central California, Tucson, Saigon, Honolulu, etc.
When I was working on fire bombers, I traveled around the West a lot every summer, living in motels, and eating in restaurants.
Sorry, no, I have not led a sheltered life. Not in my opinion, anyway.
In any case, I simply do not agree with indicting an entire generation for the actions of one person (or even a few people!
