Most vehicles now use a computer chip, so the steering wheel lock is not necessary. The electronic key sounds good, but it raises a few questions.
The electronic keys are quite large, so what happens if you have three vehicles like I do. Since I never know which vehicle I need to have access to, trying to carry all three in your pocket would be awkward as they are very large in size.
If you loose a regular key you can get a copy for a few bucks, but if you loose the electronic key try several hundred dollars to replace it.
What happens if you are out in the boondocks, and the battery quits in the electronic key?

Heck, my 2003 Silverado doesn't have a steering column lock. I don't think anything has a locking steering column anymore. Makes them more difficult to steal by lifting from the rear wheels, be cause they're all over the place behind the tow truck.
Our 2010 Jeep Liberty has a column ignition switch and locking column. I'll take a walk out on the plant floor and see if any of the columns we build have a non lock option. BRB with an answer.

OK from what I was just told, if you have a column without a gear shifter your column does not lock. We install an aluminum cover over the lock opening to keep dirt and foreign material out of the column. I'm going to talk with an engineer tomorrow afternoon to double check this.

Most Toyota (except Prius)ignition switches are on the dash and not the steering column. Doesn't make it harder or easier to bypass vehicle immobiliser devices by thirves, but somewhat easier to repair.

Bought DW a new Avalon Limited for Christmas. First car for us that has No Key! Just a push button on the dash to start. Kind of cool when you walk up to the car at night, and it senses the fob, turns the door handle lights on, and then the interior lights. Just touching the door handle unlocks the car.

My '69 Bronco has the ignition key switch in the dash, which was common for early body style Broncos. It doesn't have a steering wheel lock.

So did my 66 Datsun PU. That way I could turn the key with my left hand while working the manual choke with the right.

Don My '98 Ranger has a stick shift on the floor, with a locking steering column, via the ignition key switch. Same with my old '87 Dodge Ram 50, '78 Chevy Luv, '79 Jeep CJ-5, '80 IH Scout II, '80 Toyota pickup, '81 Toyota pickup and likely a few others I have forgotten.
