Just one of the many reasons why private parks are our last choice when we RV. We prefer city, state, federal, county, and COE parks, but we have had to stay at private parks when the aforementioned parks are full, so we just pay the extra (we have 4 kids as well) and enjoy our trip. Planning ahead can help avoid most of these situations.

We've been looking fo a vacation spot in NW-NY and NW-Pennsylvania and surroundings areas, I'm getting a bit tired looking. Most sites have a limit of 2-adults/2-kids or 2-adults/3-kids, we have a family of 4-kids and we have to pay the extra. WHY is this??
I figured a family is a family, as long as there are 2 adults their dependant children.
Anyone have any good places they can recommend where a family is considered a family no matter the size?
Many thanks for your help.

Camp where you want. For what you have invested in your RV, tow vehicle and camping gear, what is a couple dollars to have a good time with your family where you want to be, not where all the kids are free?

I agree one needs to keep the priorities in the proper order. We use our TT as an alternative to Motels when visiting various places so full service CGs convenient to what we will be doing is the number one priority not cost since it will always beat the Motel and eating all meals out costs plus we only go where we can take our two four legged members of the family.

Life is too short to pinch every penny when you have probably just spent mega $$$ getting there at 8 to 10mpg in fuel and the wear and tear on your TV.

I don't think it is discrimination. It is a user fee. Big over the road trucks pay more taxes than a car driver, is that discrimination? No, the truck does more damage to the road.

Your larger family will use more water, electric, and sewer. Your family will create more trash and cause more wear and tear on facilities, thus you pay a higher fee.

If my wife and I have to pay the same rate as a large family then in reality we are subsidizing that large family. Only the government does that.

You do have options though, like some have pointed out.

First I would look up the definition of discrimation...this is not discrimnation as it is their rules and the rule applies to everyone, not just you!

Don't like the rules of a certain RV park then don't go there...no one said you had to nor are they forcing you to...

It is also a management tool for the park to keep the occupancy down to a manageable level. People with a large group will avoid parks with fees for extra people. If a park has 100 sites and each site has two or three people in it, the park's facilities have to service around 250 people. If the average site has 5 occupants, the facilities have to serve double that amount. Plus, the larger the group size, the more likely they will have to use the park's restrooms and showers, which can create an overcrowding situation. To cylce through a large group in the single toilet/shower in a camper takes a long time. Think of what happens when a group of 10 people come back into the park after a long day. They all want to shower and get cleaned up. The single group would monopolize the bathroom and shower facilities for the next half hour or so, leaving the other 99 sites without an option.
Finally, some parks, especially parks where the sites are close together, feel that large groups are just disruptive to the other guests, so they manage group size, either with a limit on the number of people in each site (which leads to inevitable confrontation) or with a fee. A very good businessman once told me you never tell anyone "NO", you just price their request so high, they make the decision themselves.

I’ve read this thread, also commented earlier, and in defense of the original post person, she or he (MY4KIDS) never said they felt they were being discriminated against. That’s some one else’s comment.

I understand the frustration, but I wont let it keep me from camping. We usually boondock so this is not much of an issue, but the times we have used a campground it was the first 2 were free and the rest were from $5.00 to $10.00 extra per person per night. There are 5 of us so it adds up quick.

You aren't being discriminated against.

Since it's just the wife and I who travel, are we discrimated against by being charged the same price as 2 adults and 2 children? No.

Those are the rates the particular campground/parks charge. If I don't like it I can find a CG/RV Park that charges less for 2 people than for 4 people. Otherwise, I'll just pay the fee charged and put out the anchor for however long I plan to stay there.
