If boondocking, having some 30 pounders is great. However, it doesn't hurt to have an Extend a Stay system so one can use the 20# tanks. That way, if you are an area where propane refillers are hard to get ahold of, it isn't too bad.

Horizontal tanks do NOT require a new valve; only re-certification (at least here in California)

That propane fill kid could be putting you and your family in danger. If it was as simple as looking at the exterior of the tank, there wouldn't be a requirement to be recertified by a trained, certified professional.

To the OP: Are the propane containers tanks or bottles?
A 30 gallon propane tank is likely horizontal and not really removable. A 30 gallon bottle is vertical, and fairly easily detached by us mortals.
If it is a removable bottle, I'd consider purchasing 1-2 extras to have on hand, so at your leisure, you can get them refilled and swapped out. This way, your RV always has two, and possibly two full ones ready to go at anytime.
If it is a tank, then it can't hurt to consider an Extend A Stay system and an automatic changeover valve. That way, one can run on 20# bottles if need be.

New tanks are generally good for 12 years. Get the cost to recertify for 5 years and do the math. A 30# tanks is generally much more expensive than a 20#

I guess I have bottles if that's the term. I've always considered them tanks. They're vertical and removable. Re-certifying in one place is $40. and in another it's $9.95! A new tank at Camping World is about $68.

The 5er that I just got has expired tanks.
I exchanged one of the tanks at Tractor Supply.

Had the 30# tank in our old, 1993, FW and it ran out of time. Took it to a dealer to see about getting them certified and the cost, on this one was quite a bit, even back about seven or eight years ago. This was the 30# tank that laid flat but could be taken out and re-filled. I probably got took, but the new tank cost about $160 or more if I remember correctly. However, that size tank worked quite well for us. We could take a couple of weeks worth of trips dry camping and not run out. I think I am getting two 30# bottles in the new FW we are picking up next week. These will be stand up bottles rather than the one that's on it's side. It's amazing how heavy those bottles seemed to be laying on their sides under the front of the trailer, especially when full and trying to get them back in the FW,
