"Open fires are not permitted on campsites" right in the rules everyone has.
The very minute the camp office closed a 'smoke fire' was going on a site. After smoking out one-half of the campsites, the Ranger came and told them if you want a campfire you can use the ring down on the beach.
The people said they didn't know (although they have been here before).
Fifteen minutes after the Ranger left...the wood fire was roaring, this time in the barbque provided. The smoke is thick right now.
What would you do?

Well I've always thought that campfires and their smoke are part of the camping experience.

So...you do not believe everyone should follow the rules of the campground they are in?
Sorry if I did not make it clear. My point was these people have no regard for the rules or others comfort and I was asking if anyone would complain, speak to them etc.

Ah I thought you meant that they built a fire in the ring pointed out by the Ranger. Well you could speak to the CG Host assuming they have one.

I have a brochure from a Curry Hammock visit. It says---"Fires are permitted only in the raised grills in each campsite, and the community fire pit on the campground end of the beach."
Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

I believe having a fire in the grill provided (charcoal or wood) is not breaking the letter of the rule. I have done the same thing there. It may have been to big to cook on but it sure added to the evening.

Their original fire 'big smoke' was not in the grill but right between their three large tents and wafting over the campground. Not talking about a little bit of campfire smoke here.
We feel that rules are made for a reason and if we do not want to adhere to them, we can leave and go somewhere else.
Just wondering if most others agree.
Curious...did your 'breaking the letter of the rule' ruin someone else's evening while adding to yours?
I broke no rules as my fire was contained in the camp grill provided for that purpose and the host couldn't have missed it. Besides I know how to make a proper fire, not smoke bombs. I get the feeling you wouldn't like that either.

I'd contact the ranger (preferable the one who already overlooked their disgression previously) and let them handle it. I love our forest FAR too much to see some A hole ruin it for the rest by either flaunting the rules or burning it down. Brochures are nice but can't address local situations that may require overriding rules in the brochure.

My quote ("Open fires are not permitted on campsites") is from the brochure as of today, but the ranger did tell them about the firepit on the beach (and that the grills are to be used for cooking only). Seems they dont want to go to the beach for their campfire.
