Went on a charter out of Homer about 25 years ago, but none since. Wife and I want to do a trip for Halibut in June, and since we will be in both Homer and Valdez, I was wondering if anyone had done both and which they preferred, doing a trip in both area's is a tad spendy for us.
Thanks Musqwa

I've done both (as well as been out in private vessels from both).....and can't really recommend/differentiate between the two. That being said, one might go to Homer just for a fishing charter, but IMNSHO, there's lots of reasons to go to Valdez.

I guess I'd say it's a push, but I'd lean towards making the halibut trip the highlight of your Homer leg and enjoying the scenery (either road or on a sightseeing vessel) in Valdez.

It is my thinking that Homner is a much shorter ride to fish than Valdez

Go halibut fishing in Ninilchik (near Homer) and go sightseeing on the LuLuBelle in Valdez.

Thanks folks, I was sort of leaning towards fishing in the Homer area and going to Valdez for the sights, so thanks for the nudge, we were in Valdez a few years back and had booked a senic tour, but got word my MIL had passed, so it was a fast trip back to Alberta and had to cancel everthing.

Does anyone know if the tour boat, LuLu Belle, mentioned above by resmas, is going to be back in service this summer? She was not operational last summer, 2011, due to extensive dameage done to the boat on a grounding. This occurred on the return spring time trip from Washington, where the owners/operators winter with the boat.

There is at least one charter out of Homer that is a two day for little more than a typical 4 to 6 hour trip. Leave in afternoon come back late morning. You get two limits that way. Fish usually fall into the chicken catagory but may hit all turkeys if you're lucky.

Don't forget to have a pint at the Salty Dog.

If you are in Homer, Kodiak is a short (about 12 hour) ferry ride with some breathtaking scenery. Kodiak has good fishing too, and if you are on island in June the reds are usually running heavy in the rivers. Just a thought...
