I really enjoyed having my metal detector along on the south american trip. It did not render me enough $$ to pay the fuel, however!

The favorite places were of course the beaches! On one southern Brazilian beach, I found a beautiful old key, that the locals said was from a pirate's chest!! wow...maybe, but it was old anyhow.

I did find several pieces of the 18k brasilian gold jewelry from a child's small bracelet to a rather thick man's wrist chain. Interesting was the various coins, that are no longer in circulation, some were silver content.

At one beach, a man came running to me (someone told him I was detecting metal beer caps) and he was almost crying because he had lost his keys to his car! His wife and three kids were holding their beach balls, and chairs....ready to go home!! Neverless, the metal detector rose into action and found his keys.. very good PR with the natives!!!

Great item to have aboard your trip...thru the trek of the americas!

Only important thing we've found with our metal detector was a special ring that belonged to GS's girlfriend. They were sitting on a blanket watching 4th of July fireworks & she took her ring off to put hand lotion on her hands. She laid it on the blanket & forgot to put it back on again. As you can imagine, the blanket was picked up & later she thought about the ring. She bawled her eyes out & wanted us to come that night but we made her wait until next day so we could search in the daylight. Success !

Always thought about getting a metal detector, but just have never done it.

I suppose if one sets their expectations too high, it could be a disappointing hobby. But I would do it just for the fun of finding things.

Metaldetecting has it's side benefits, it's a icebreaker! When the local kids see you scanning the beach, they are curious, and come out ...then they wind up "helping" you... especially in Latin America...they help you learn the language!!!

It's really difficult to do bird watching with a metal detector. You don't find too many metallic birds underground.

I haven't found to many in the trees either

If at first you don't succeed--don't try sky diving!!
I'd rather be camping

We have a Garrett Ace 250 metal detector and love it! We have everything from old coins to jewelry to junk. Laws vary so check the permissions needed for where you wish to search.
