WE have gotten moved and the shop is ready to go except for running electric.I need some help deciding which wire to run ;the plan is to run it underground, need 220 volt to run my welder..I am thinking 8 gauge 3 wire plus ground will do the job.The shop is only 10X20 so there is not a lot of lights to contend with.I already have the inside all wired and am running off a temporary 10 gauge extension right now..

Without knowing the total potential load and the length of the wire run, it's pretty difficult for anyone to suggest a proper wire size to feed your sub panel.

You should go with whatever the county approved when you got your electrical permit. They are trained to help you figure out what is safe.

Probably nothing smaller than #4 or #0 would be even better to allow for future expansion.

One of my welders plugs into a 20 amp 110 outlet. The other one uses a 60 amp 220 service. Saying "a/c welder" doesn't narrow it down much. What is the input current rating listed on the welder's power tag?

Excelent answer.
There are wire charts. You can access on the web.
This is one such site
I would just look it up.
You look at the length of the run (Remember it's a 2 way run)
you look at the amount of current (max draw) and...
You pick a wire.
