My family and I plan to spend about half our time at full service RV sites. But the other half may be alongside the river or at someone's house. When our black water tank is full in those situations...how do you know where to dump it? I have heard that the local water treatments facility will have them. Of course, when on the road finding these will be difficult (which is my problem and not yours). How do you handle this?
As a side note, I see alot of these "portable waste tanks" with wheels and a handle. What are these for? I can see in certain situations where this would be useful but can't really think about what these situations would be. Just trying to figure out if I need to buy one of these!
Thanks everyone!

Most use the portable waste tanks ("totes") for grey water, though some use it for the black tank. If you dump into one of these, you're still stuck with the problem of where to dump the tote. Normally, one would tow it to the dump station at the campground and dump it. The larger totes are designed to hook over the ball and be slowly towed to the dump station.

Here's another one, http://www.sanidumps.com/maps/help.php plus, many cities have waste plants that have dumps at them, or some truck stops (Flying J)have dumps, (for a fee).
I see Fayetteville in your profile, would that be in NC, NY AR GA or TN, at any rate, you may want to check with a nearby State Park, or NF, most of which have dump stations, you may have to pay an entry fee.

Wow! Thanks for sending that link! The power of the internet....an entire webpage devoted where to dump your poo. I suspect this will become an Iphone ap soon!
So it sounds like I won't need to tote since my tank is built in. I just have a nozzle to empty.
I suspected the tote was for travel trailers who didn't have hooks up and they didn't want to tow the entire trailer to dump.

I use an app for my Android phone called "Allstays Camp & RV" that finds the dump stations nearest to you (if GPS is enabled) and routes you to your chosen one. It also finds campgrounds and lets you filter on what kind (SP, NP, NFS, KOA etc.) and what amenities are offered. I think I paid something like $5 for it and it has been well worth it even though it is a little buggy and quirky.
Just about any commercial campground, public or private, will have a dump station you can pay a few dollars to use.

You also might want to look into the FLOWJET that will connect up to your main drain cap and allow 12VDC push button control on draining the tanks into the tote tanks to haul off using a 3/4-inch water hose. The flowjet comes in a nice carrying case.
Alot of folks that use the flowjet will empty their tanks down their local toliet at their home. Just run the 3/4-inch hose into the bathroom window and pump it down the pot...
Very handy tool to have with you. Makes filling up the totes real easy too.

These are available from several places including AMAZON.

If you're camping at someone's home AND they have a sewer clean out port it makes a good place to dump tanks. RV Dumps.com is a web site that shows you where you can dump in your area. Nearly all campgrounds will allow dumping for a (usually nominal) fee. State parks almost always allow dumping for a "day use fee". Some gas stations have dump stations and many highway rest area provide free dump stations (nearly all in Kansas have this).

A little more info that may help clear up the questions that these answers bring up. First Most RV's have 2 holding tanks - 1 black water that contains waste that comes from toilet and 1 grey water that contains waste from shower and sinks. Your gray will fill MUCH quicker than your black. Many people use these tanks to dump gray water only during camping times when there are no sewer connections. I generally have to dump gray if I am staying more than a day or two, but my black will go nearly 3 times as long before it is filled. I shower/cook and wash dishes in my rv, so use more water for those purposes. Many state/federal parks only have dump station, rather than sewer connections at each site. When I am at one of those I will use my blue tank to haul the gray water to the dump station, so I don't have to break camp. Then I dump black and last gray tank fill on the way out of the park. Local park less than 5 miles down the road charges only $3 for dump, so I am holding off on FLOWJET. It takes lots of $3 dumps to equal the cost of the Flowjet.
