First, thanks to everyone for their responses to my question. Due to the soaring cost of fuel combined with the price tag on the caravan we have decided to go on our own! I think this way we can spend more time seeing the country and the wildlife and less time making the next "stage show" that was paid for in advance! plus the main advantage of not having to make that "schedule". Since I track my expenses day to day on our trips I will post a savings comparison when we get back this late summer. Wish us luck, and any comments are welcome!
Always waiting for that next hike, next boat to paddle, next reef to explore and the trip that gets us there!

I read back to figure out where you're going. We're planning a trip, possibly in 2 yrs, to Alaska. There is NO way I'd do a caravan ---for the very reasons you mention. I want to do it on MY time (or DH's time ). We think we'll be on the road for 3-4 months. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Take the caravan's agenda with you - it may give you some sightseeing info you'd miss otherwise. Get a current Milepost - a big help! Have a nice trip - plan to stay as long as you possibly can - it is a BIG place!!
See ya' down the road!

We're going to Alaska independently, July and August, maybe a little September. For me, reading up on where we are going and making a (general) trip plan is a big part of the adventure. And we can alter the plan on the fly if we want to.
But I have friends whose idea of travel is "Just tell me when to get on the tour bus." So there are different trips for different folks.

We have often thought of going on a caravan but they are simply pricing themselves out of the market; too rich for my blood!

I went on two caravans. I figured I just had a fluke bad experience. So I went on a second , it was worst than the first. Neither delivered or visited locations as promised. Really felt cheated and a second class experience. Never again.
Enjoy YOUR trip.
