I do the opposite. I attempt to get the lowest cost GPS (i.e. refurbished, no updates) with all the bells and whistles. I then give it away after a few years and get a new one with newest features (i.e. Lane assist.) Don't buy a forever GPS since it will be obsolete in a few years. Much like cell phones and laptops are.
with lifetime updates, how does it become obsolete?

Obsolete- because they come out with new features like RV model knows the height of overpasses so it does not route on roads with low overpasses. I WISH THAT IS HOW IT WORKS SO FAR but they are working on something to do that. Right now the RV/Truck model knows truck stops and campgrounds but I have heard it will still route down a road with low overpass

I would say that your example is not "obsolete", it is merely not buying enough GPS in the first place.

bumpy
Let see:
- Lane assist
- bigger screen
- better resolution
- traffic updates
- better sound
- faster satelite location
- clearance issues
- vehicle choices:need I really go on....
Take a look at a GPS three years ago and compare the $ to $ price and the features to a new one and you'll get the idea. Now do you really think nothing will change in the next three years?

you miss the point. IMHO "obsolete" means No Longer In Use according to my funk and wagnels. I am still using some of my GPSs that were not yet WASS? yes, you can always buy a newer/more featured/ piece of equipment but the older one is not necessarily "obsolete". where did I say that I thought nothing will change in the next three years?

I see you're an early bird also.
Ok, if that's how you view it, and it works for you great, but....
On the other hand I have a black and white TV that I can sell you since it still works great. Many would view it as obsolete though. Do you see my point?
GPS's are the same way, why pay for a feature that will only help tie you into something long term that is still evolving.

I have a new GPS, and other than some features it still works the same way as my 4 year old one. Typing this post on a 5 year old laptop. It ain't gas powered or green screen either. I would not consider a 5 year old laptop, tv, gps, car etc obsolete. If it still works for you, can still keep it updated then obsolete would not apply. It's when it stops being supported and can no longer be updated that it begins to become obsolete.

So with the RNRV Gps If you have the life time updates, you can get at lest one fresh yearly up date, plus other updates on information that has been submitted by owners, every few months. In the 2Q we are going to get a new Woodalls info packet Free download. So it looks like the RN are doing whats right by there customers. I have seen USED-REFURBISHED units sell for more than brand-new unites, and no updates of course.
