I was wondering if anyone has done their own sanding and reclearcoating the top front and rear caps on a motorhome and how big a job is it?
I was quoted almost 8 grand by an RV body shop!Beyond my budget!

I can't help you LJ on the other side of the country from you! But, $8,000.00 is way to much for some sanding and reclearcoating IMHO!

Totally unreasonable.
A friend of mine has the same problem and we tried the Red Max treatment
It didn't work. The edges of the problem area doesn't have the same color so the coating didn't clear that edge up. The area where the clearcoat was gone completely did indeed shine real well.

Is this a clearcoat/basecoat or a clear paint on top of a gel coat. Clear coat needs a basecoat to melt into. A clear paint is just a coating over a paint. To answer your question I am in the process or sanding off and re-doing. I have just over $500 in paint so far, Got about 1/4 done. Had to delay untill it warms up again. Good luck. Check in with your local paint store. Your cost is the same as I got local here.

You should have a good knowledge and tools for doing body work, especially on fiberglass. If you do it won't be that big a job.

This is common on Motorhomes of almost every make. We have a fellow in the park here who makes a living out of repainting and clearcoating just the front and rear caps. Aproximately 1800 for front and back.

Ours did the same thing. If you have the time and about 100 bucks you can do it your self.

Sand and prep
Basecoat once or twice.
4 coats of clearcoat using a 2 part clear. I recomend Spraymax 2K. It is a 2 part clear coat that comes in a special can that once punctured must be used in 48 hours. It is a special can with special nozel. About 22 bucks a can. Professional results. You will need two cans for the front cap.

I had my front cap repainted in Red Bay, AL for $350. That was from the top of windshield back to the roof and down the sides of windshield to blend in the paint. He also painted the little white rain gutter to match the MH.

Just had mine repaired. Full sanding of the clear coat, two coats of paint and two coats of clear then a final buffing. Also had some dents taken out of the Jeep hood and then painted. All for 800 bux.

Try Justices's Body Shop..US19 SpringHill just south of WalMart, west side of road. Drive it down, plenty of room. He gave me a good estimate on some paint. Also does a lot of Corvette glass painting. Good Luck
