Hello all, my girlfriend and I are going to start traveling the states next year with a 5th wheel. We are new at this and could use some advise. Is there cheaper RV campsites to hook up at or are they pretty much the same prices throughout. I noticed around 40.00 nightly for full hook ups. We will be retired, so our intentions are to stay a few weeks at a time. Are there clubs we could join to get discounts? I really appritiate any advise. Again thanks

$30-35 has been more my experience, but then it really depends where you are. Passport America gives you 50% discounts, but their listings usually come with some restrictions on length of stay and day of the week, GS gives you 10% off at many locations, then there are state and federal parks most, not all in the $20s, but if you are over 62 you can get a lifetime senior/golden pass for $10 and get discounts off their federal already low fees. Of course there are many BLM lands you can stay for free sans hookups if you want to try that for a while. There are there other clubs also, but if I were you I would start with state and federal parks, maybe get Passport America for travels in between them and go from there once you get a better feel on locations you will be visiting most.

Welcome.
While we do not stay in RV parks/CG alot due to our RV'ing style (hit and run) because we will grab a bit of sleep here and there we did stay in a few on our cross country last year.
$40 was about tops we saw but the ones we stayed in ranged from $13 (at Great Salt Lake state park) to $27. The $27 RV park in Midland TX had awesome pull thoughs for about any length with full hook ups.
We live in an area that is more like a remote NP/NF so we then to use the MH to get to the hub bub of life then to get away from it or other wise we would just stay at home.
Best of luck in your travels where it be short weekend stays or full timing in the future. Having a RV has led to new experiences both good and bad that otherwise we would have never had.

You said you plan to stay several weeks at each place. I think you will find that most RV parks, not public campgrounds, give discounts for extended stays. Usually a weekly rate where you get seven nights for the price of six nights. The monthly rates are usually discounted considerably more but you pay for your electricity separately.

We have been paying between $10 (federal park with golden access card) and $62 (Large resort in Florida) a night. Staying a few weeks at a time should get you the weekly discount rate.
Note on the access card: you can get one if you are 62+ OR if you are disabled (SS disability or 100% DAV).
If you are going to join one club, join Passport America. It is inexpensive to join and it will pay for itself if you use it 2-3 times a year. If you are going to join two clubs, also join the Escapees. They have a website/forum. Check it out.
If you like nature, the park system is a great place to stay. State, Federal, Forest Service, Corps of Engineers, County and City parks.
If you are comfortable with the idea of $40 a night, you will have no problems at all finding a site within your budget. See you on the road!!

Depends on where you are, when you are there and what you want. We've paid anywhere from $20/night for electric and water (no sewer) at a COE campground, to upwards of $80/night at a tourist destination ith almost everyhing you can imagine. $40/night is a fair number to go off. You can go cheaper or you can go higher.
You can buy into some "clubs" that offer discounts at select campgrounds. But be sure you check the fine print as some of them have blackout dates or tiems of the week. Not all, but some of them do.
Good Sam's gives you 10% at RV Parks that accept it. KOA gives 10% also if you join them (Usually you will save enough to almost purchase the membership after a couple nights stay). Many people do not like to plan ahead. I like to plan ahead as much as possible. I like to know where I will be (that night) and how much it will cost me ahead of time. Of course, I am not retired and have limited time to camp. So every day counts to me. When the wife and I are older and retired, don't have to set a schedule, don't have to worry about a small child, then our views may change somewhat. But then we will probably be in a motorhome and not have a tag along.

Depends on where you are -- Oregon State Campgrounds are excellent and run about $28 during peak season. You might also look at opportunities to become camp hosts -- they stay for free but often have light chores/responsibilities -- worth a look.

DVA does not need to be 100%. They have be to be 30 or 50% permanent. I forget which.
