We are planning a trip to the San Francisco CA area the first week of March. I decided to use Priceline.com for the first time. I looked up the cities I wanted to stay and then decided to use Priceline's bidding process. What a great deal and a wonderful process. I will never use anyone else from now on for booking a hotel room.
We got the following:
Sacramento CA 03-04/05-12
Courtyard By Marriott
Regular booking price on Priceline per night--$149
My winning bid was $60 a night
Walnut Creek/Concord CA
Hilton
Regular price $108
My winning bid $81
San Francisco Fisherman's Warf
Holiday Inn Fisherman's Warf
Regular price $157
My winning bid $70
What a great and inexpensive way to book a room. You have to pay in advance and cannot cancel unless you pay a fee for trip interruption. When you bid, you bid on the star ratings of hotel and within a given area of the city. You can also include special services like limiting hotels to those that accept pets.
If you have not used Priceline, give it a try. Like me. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised.

SIL did snag a great deal out in Portland, OR last fall on a room but she was already on the road and hadn't picked a hotel yet. I no too many people who have not been happy to take the risk but I'm fairly conservative by nature.

Do you have to pay in advance with Kayak, too? That was one thing that always made me uncomfortable with priceline.

The last time I used Priceline I paid Motel 6 prices and got to stay in places like Holiday Inn Express that normally cost about twice what a Motel 6 costs. I believe I told Priceline I wanted two 1/2 stars so as to exclude places like Motel 6.
The last time I did this I was on the road and I was making the reservations the same day. There was little chance I wouldn't make it to the hotel that night.

I really do not believe there is much risk. If you are worried about having to cancel, you can pay an additional $5 a night for trip insurance. That is a small price to pay to save 30% to 60% off their price. With trip insurance, you get 100% refund if you change plans.
I looked up Kayak. Their prices are almost identical to Priceline's regular price. Frankly, the hotels I won were "better" than I expected. As I said, I'm sold and will never make another trip without using them. Great savings or allows you to upgrade to better hotel for same or even lower price from where you normally would have stayed.
