I was just reading the owners manual of my 2011 Honda CR-V. The max. load is only 850 lbs.
So if I carry 5 passengers, the max. they can weigh is 170 lbs each. If we each weighed 200 lbs, we would be well over the weight limit.
Question: if you have friends who put you over the weight limit of your toad, do you advise them?

what's the empty weight or curb weight of the vehicle? what is the GVWR of the vehicle. the curb weight is usually the empty vehicle (no people or stuff) but with a full tank of gas. 850-pounds seems pretty light. to answer your question, no, we don't require our friends to declare their weight when riding in our vehicles.

Wow, only 850 lbs.? My little Jetta can handle 1100. I'm guessing that you won't be able to convince 3 200 lb. guys (or gals) to sit in the back seat of your CR-V so I don't think you will have a problem.

Could you actually (WOULD YOU) travel with five 200 pound people in the car? I don't think I would.

Hey, my new Honda Fit has a payload of 450 lbs!!!!!! My wife and myself together weigh in at 300 lbs, so that means that we only have 150 left. I visit my brother every so often and take him to lunch. He weighs in at about 200, so I am 50 lbs. overweight. So much for a 5 passenger car. Everyone would have to weigh 90 lbs.

With warm regards, James I think that most car basic weight figures include the vehicle, a full tank of gas, and an "average" driver (170 pounds I think). If you mean a driver and four passengers, then each passenger could weigh 200 pounds. If you mean the driver plus five passengers, then you get the 170 pound limit.

That's pretty typical for some even larger SUVs, not just the CR-V size. Most likely you are not going to be able to fit more than four large people in, because the fifth seat is small. Three in the back usually assumes at least one, more likely 2 or 3, will be children.
Sad thing, for a long time even many larger minivans and mid-size SUVs with seating for seven or eight had carrying capacities in the 800 to 900 pound range. In many cases that was tire limited.
