Hi: Not that the back door view is bad or anything but a side window/ door view can be good as well.

Extremely good points you make. I do partcularly like the view from the back door that you have pictured. I can see what you are saying about looking through the back window when backing. I don't really ever think of that because the stuff I usually drive does not have a back window. Don't miss what I don't have on the road. You do make some really good points here. From my perspective it seems that the advantages of either are pretty much a toss up. I will be looking for a late model used one. I would like the most floor space and storage possible when the time comes to sign the check. My intent is to put the truck right at or a bit over the RAWR. I still plan to pull a small tandem axle trailer for the toys to ride on.

Now that is what I call a view. Nothing like that over here. One of these days I hope to see that again.
Thanks for sharing that.

Hi Blacktruck,

Great discussion going here. We have always had rear door campers and almost always are pulling a trailer. Our current camper doesn't have a crawl through window so we can't see into the camper let alone through back door to see the trailer. I installed a wide angle TV camera on the back of the camper and the 7 inch monitor on the rear view mirror in truck. I can see the entire trailer except for the first 3 feet of it as well as everything on both sides and behind it. This is far superior to looking through the camper and back door that I used to do on our old rigs.

I have thought a lot about getting a camper with a side door so we wouldn't have work around the trailer coming and going from the camper. We rarely un-hitch. Since putting the FOLD DOWN DECK on the back of the camper I have decided I like the rear door as the trailer becomes and extension of the deck and we put steps beside the trailer for coming and going. Of course this wouldn't work with an enclosed trailer or boat trailer.

Neat idea.....When I buy my camper I am planning to pull a tandem axle flatbed to haul whatever fits my fancy at that particular trip. The idea of making that an extended deck is a good idea. Heck of a patio or deck that most campers would envy. Might be a reason to go with a rear door. I've tried the rear cameras on a few things I have driven. I didn't like them but it has been a few years and I'm sure technology has made them better. Too much of a dinosaur here. I'm used to not having a rear window at all and just living with my mirrors. I think if I lived up there where you are I would be using a camper all of the time. I'm tired of barren ground where even the weeds don't grow. Beautiful set up it would appear. Thanks for sharing.
Stay safe out there.

Blacktruck: There are all sorts of variations users fabricate and invent for their comforts. We added a wider landing to make entry/exit safer.

Since the trailer hitch actually resides below the deck, the trailer tongue has become another step to use.

Our 'Grey Box' is the first step, the trailer tongue the second, the deck the third, the rear bumper the fourth and into the camper you go.

The walkway on the tongue of the boat trailer provides another natural step down from the black deck. Alongside it sits our 'grey box' step that travels with us, boat or no boat.

The black deck is also a 'bench seat' that sees lots of use. We seldom deploy chairs any longer.

Nowt that is one heck of a good idea to keep you from slipping while launching or retrieving a boat. Thanx for the idea.

Tiki2:

That is "Armstrong No Glue Linoleum", obtained at Lowes for about the same price as the regular stuff. It is far thicker and backed by a 'canvas' backing that keeps it from curling. It's resilient when walked upon and not glued down. It lays as one piece in the entire camper.

I bought a 10-pack of school poster board at Walmart and began trimming, piece-by-piece, to the contours of the camper's floor, taping them together as I went. The paper is wrinkled in this picture but was perfectly flat when used.

I removed the pattern and taped it to a 12' wide by 5' long piece of linoleum. Using a straight edge and box knife, I cut the linoleum to the pattern.

For molding, I happened to use some little plastic edging made for 'wallboard', also obtained at Lowes. The stuff is used for joining the masonite wallboard for bathrooms.

One could just as easily use small quarter-round molding, or just not put any at all. Here's some more pics.
