My family will be travelin through Virginia April 1, 2012. We have planned to stop at STONY FORK CAMPGROUND, VA. Has any one had any experience in this park? I understand the park will have just opened up, any recommendations? I believe I should be able to get a site without making any reservations. We do have the Senior Pass, so the fee will be reduced for us.
Thank you for any info you may have.

It is a very nice NFS campground, where many sites have electric service. A stream meanders through the park, and it is very shaded. Your Federal seniors pass will not get you half price on an electric site, but you will get about a 1/3 discount. We were there on a weekend, might have been Memorial Day weekend, and it was packed. Young children were running wild, playing on the bridges and leaving bikes parked in the road. It might not be too bad on April 1, but I would probably not go back on a weekend.

We stopped there last April on our way back to New England. It was a very nice park and we had the place to ourselves - there might have been 2 or 3 other campers there. Here are some notes and pictures from our visit.
The Golden Geezer pass was good for a $6 discount.
Great little NF campground, most (if not all) site are full shade, some with electric & water.
Like footslogger we were there on Memorial Day weekend, it was pretty well full & there were a lot of kids, but it wasn't that noisy.
This place is pretty well secluded, about 10 miles from Wytheville.

I found the same interesting tree that you found, I thought it looked like a woodpecker apartment building.
You will love it.

No reservations needed.
You have 4 camping options:
1-no hookups.
2-water only.
3-Electric only.
