Are most shanks pretty much the same? Can an Equalizer hitch head be mounted on a Reese shank?

Check the hole spacing and weight ratings.

Hitch hookup dimension wise, I think so. For example I run a air safe air hitch on my bumper pull, and it's standard mounting plate for a WD hitch has the same hole pattern and dimensions as my Reese Titan WD hitch head. Fits up perfect.

Now different shanks DO have different weight ratings for tongue weight!! Be careful on that. And they may have slightly different dimensions from the hitch pin location to the mounting end of the shank.
