So I let it sit all night plugged in and the battery disconnect turned on. Batteries now both read 13.5. Nice!! So batteries are both good. Now I can check generator operation with full batteries and see if that makes a difference.

Seems kind of high for batteries that have been sitting all night. I'd disconnect the main negative lead from the batteries and then let them sit.
