I have to make a trip to Salt Lake City, UT from PA over the next 3 - 4 months, if I wait until mid-May what are my chances of good weather if I take I-80 from Davenport, IA west?

There is no way to predict thunderstorms that far in advance but it's likely you may run into one on that route SOMEWHERE along the way. Might also expect some windy conditions in Wyoming but again, no way of predicting when. Just a couple of things you can expect in the midwest in spring. Nothing to get too concerned about as long as you just stay alert to local conditions. Expect LOTS of trailers as it's the easiest way through the mountains for truckers.
Good luck / Skip

You didn't say if you would be towing or not. I-80 is almost always open to traffic. There are times that it is open I wouldn't want to be towing a TT. Check out the below web site. Web cams along I-80 in Wyoming.

March would be questionable, with snow and cold. April is even better. May should be okay, although we have seen snow as late as early June. Best advice - if there's snow or too much wind, pull off.
We had a Kountrystar, model 3354 I believe, that we drove through blizzards and everything. But we are used to driving in snow. We did pull off for wind on one trip in July. I believe the windspeed was 60 mph or so.
Temporarily afoot, but lookin' to get back into the game

There's a 50/50 chance of rain, also there is a 50/50 chance of partly cloudy, in addition of a 50/50 chance of sunshine.
Worst case scenario is a 50/50 chance of severe crosswinds.

If you have an awning on your rig...make sure the canvas is wrapped tight and the arms are secured well. Everything you ever heard about wind opening an awning while you are driving is true. It can and has happened. Not fun when a 50 mph gust catches you as you are driving 60 mph down the road. The winds in those big open areas really do come out of nowhere.

I used to live in Park City, UT, right off the 80. There is also 50/50 chance of snow in May. Just check the weather before you leave.

To answer your question accurately, your chances for good weather in this region in Mid-May is very good. Yes you COULD hit some snow but it would be unusual and probably would not stick that time of year (yes, I know it "snows" out here every month of the year at some altitudes) and shouldn't be a factor. Wind--yes, the wind blows here all the time and Southern Wyoming is blessed with an abundance--buy a good awning lock and expect to encounter some breezy driving.
Otherwise Mid May is a nice time to visit--have a good drive.

Thanks for the replies guys! We went out I-70 back in 2004 in August which was hot weather and windy, but better than snow.

We took nearly the same route from Kentucky a couple of years ago to Zion NP and had no problems whatsoever. It rained once or twice but that was it. Had a great trip. Go for it.
