oh fleas.. I spent a long time and hundreds of dollars on soaps, sprays powders and cheap drops last year.. In the end.. Save all your time, money and frustration, goto a vet and pick up "Advantage". It's a three time treatment, basically put drops on your dogs neck and down it's spine, the fleas will be dead within a few hours and any that jump on the dog will die, in turn it will rid the area of fleas as well. The treatment is not cheap but it's well worth it and it last for six months or something like that.. Trust me.. I lived a nightmare all bit up(as did my pets) last year before I broke down and admitted defeat. Now all the animals get it all the time.. DON'T believe anyone that tells you that the cheap stuff in the stores works the same, you'll be dissapointed and a little more broke when you break down and buy the proper stuff

Yup, I've used Dawn and it'll do the job. The other thing you need to do is THOROUGHLY flea-bust your entire RV. We had a *massive* flea invasion in our RV during our 1st year and our dog is sensitive to all the topical flea applications so I used Borax on all the carpets together with daily flea-coming. It took persistence, but it got the job done.

If you're interested I've got a whole post on how to flea-bust an RV here: Flea-Busting the RV - The Non-Toxic Way

Just came back from our vet.

She said Dawn will kill fleas but it is a detergent, as opposed to a soap. It will kill the fleas but it will also strip off any Avantage, Frontline, or other topical medication. So if you use a detergent shampoo or dawn, as opposed to a soap based shampoo, you must immediately reapply the medication you are using.

I asked about the idea that Frontline does not work in Florida. She said it was more a case that for some dogs the medication has to be applied every three weeks instead of once a month. As the month is coming to an end the medication is loosing it's effectiveness. Combine that with a high population of fleas and the fleas will win.

Our dog is also on antibiotics for the secondary infection and Benadryl for the itching.

Damn fleas!!!!

... The white stuff on the ground, bricks is DE we bought from the feed store to keep the scorpions and Desert Back Ants out of Sugarfoot's feeding area. They told us that the stuff (DE) is good for her insides to control internal parasites as well.

We went through x2 (I think it was) 50 lbs. bags in 7 months. But as you can see, I kept the ground saturated with the stuff.

Edit: However, I did find a few Desert Black Ant's actually skiing on the stuff! Thoughs Desert Black Ants are tough buggers!

Even left me a thank you note, an ask if I could make/leave a big pile for them so they could have a longer ski run! ...

PS .......

See, ... You wanna meet up with some Flea's, BUT You Had to take that Last Bite of Poop, didn't YOU! Now we missed that Walmart truck that was heading to Florida! ....

Our vet said we could switch to the Comfortis pill if the Advantage II did not do the job. So Comfortis does work in Florida.

But as I commented in the other post on fleas, the one flea we found on my dog while in the vet's office was staggering around in circles like it was stoned. So it was obviously dying.

Something I used before Front-line became available is this. 1 small bottle Ivory dish soap, 4 oz. glycerin, 4 oz. white vinegar. Mix in 1 gall bottle, fill rest of the way with water. Gently shake. Shampoo, wait 3-5 minutes then rinse. I fill the empty dish soap bottle with this so it's easier to use. Just refill from the gallon jug. I use a well washed milk jug.

While this will work for a short time Front-line or something else similar really works better long term.

If your RV/environment is truly infested, it can take up to 3 months to rid the area completely. That is the amount of time needed to eradicate every life stage.

Comfortis is awesome because it is a once monthly oral pill that you cannot wash off. So you can use whatever shampoo, whenever you want, without any worry about washing the preventative off.

If your dog is also on heartworm preventative, then ask your vet about Trifexis, which is Comfortis + heartworm preventative. Comfortis & Trifexis are also somewhat effective against ticks for about 14 days. But if ticks are a real problem, you can use Comfortis or Trifexis on the 1st of the month, and then a topical flea/tick preventative on the 15th. We have lots of people locally that have to "double up" like that.

The "DE" really works to kill all types of bad critters. We had a contract with a local pest control to spray our home for ants/spiders, etc. every other month but the little boogers always came back. I had used DE in food storage of wheat and decided to try it on areas where the ants would come in my kitchen. Stopped them the first time so I left the DE around window seals and they never came back! Cancelled the pest control too. Just be careful to not make it go airborne as it can cause respiratory problems if inhaled.

Did this for the last 6 months... the leas still come back with in a week and they do not drop dead. He must bathed again. I asked the Vet why and got the WORST YEAR EVER Story. Now I juast bought new stuff from the Vet that Sparky is to eat that stays in his system and does fleas and heartworm at the same time.... well see, it is a lot more costly than Advantage also.
