I'm new to rving and my wife and I would like to take the trailer to south lake tahoe in ca. We live in the bay area so I know how to get there by car, but not sure on pulling a 39ft,13557lb fifth wheel. I have a 2011 3500 hd pick up with the cumminsing engine and 410 rear end. The climb is about 8,000ft. there is also another road that comes into lake Tahoe and thats hwy 88 coming out of the town of Jackson. I would like some advice to my problem.
Thank You, Jeff
P.S. I worry about tree limbs hanging down, on hwys 50 and 88 & 89 My height is 12' 8" tall.

88 from Jackson to Hope Valley then 89 to 50 at Myers. Beautiful drive and it looks like you have the truck to pull it. I have no problem with the old 7.3L and 3.73's.

I go 88 all the time, it is better than 50 since the last bit of 50 is kind of narrow compared to 88 and 89.

Take 88 to the Jct of 89, turn left and 89 comes into 50 just a few miles from Stateline.

Enjoy your trip.

Hi,

I took Highway 50 east from Sacramento, and have not gone any other way into the city of South Lake Tahoe. I drive a 12' tall motorhome, towing a Honda CRV and now a Ford Edge. The road down into Tahoe is a little steep, and a bit scary when sitting 4' above the ground level, and looking out over the cliff to the houses about 600' below.

Yes it is a safe drive, just get out of overdrive for those steep downhill grades. I guess your truck has a exhaust brake? This will really help keep your speed in control while going down the hills.

Highway 50 has many passenger busses travel it, they are 13'6" tall, typically 550 HP and 55,000 pounds. You probably have as many horsepower per pound of weight that the huge bus has.

Power should be no problem with your truck.

Fred.

I prefer Hwy 88 over Hwy 50. No problem with your outfit in regards to low trees that I can remember and enough passing lanes to allow cars to pass.. As you are already aware, you do have to climb to get over the pass and you do have a down grade right after the top of the pass down Red lake grade but itis not too long. I hope you are not talking about a trip this snow season but are asking for the future.

I just got back from Reno. I didn't know we had a snow season this year.

Look again, we got dumped on yesterday and a huge storm forecast for tonight. Winter is back on up here in the Sierra.
