Yep, I have an account. I am "friends" with my kids so I can monitor their Facebook postings, just in case. It's just another communication tool, different than face-to-face, snail mail, email, phone, SMS ,etc. Each has their advantages and disadvantages. I use each as I see fit. Of course, you have to work with the privacy rules/settings and I still assume that anything I post there is "public" (so no bad stuff gets posted).
When I was in Japan for a while, Facebook gave me a way to keep my family posted about how things were going. It was really easy.

You can find people on Facebook and allow people to find you. The vast majority of the people on my Facebook list are people I haven't heard from in years or in some cases decades. You can easily find old high school friends, former college classmates, former friends from the military, former co-workers, etc. Of course that is assuming they are on Facebook and want to be found. Once you find and old friend, you can access their friends list and probably find out other former friends are on there too. If you have no friends or don't know anybody from your past that you want to reconnect with, then Facebook may not be for you.

Nope, have no desire to be on it. That and the fact that I doubt that my life is so fascinating that everyone else would want to know about it.
I also prefer my "friends" to be real and standing in front of me when I talk to them.
If I do have a friend who lives a distance away email works just fine and it is kept private between us.
In 10 years no one will know anyone. We will all be sitting at a computer talking to "friends" we have never met.
Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?
Should they change the name of "Friends" and add "Acquaintances".
Meaning people that aren't exactly "Friends".
Also, what exactly IS a friend compared to an acquaintance?
Do you need to meet face to face for one and not the other?
I guess the privacy issue seems to be the biggest reason to not participate. Here's another question for that. If they change the security settings to default and some people can see more information why not set default at maximum security settings and if they change something you have to go back in and loosen the security measures. In other words, why can't the present situation be reversed? If I had wanted to keep in touch with high school friends or friends I could have done so over the years via snail mail and then e-mail. When I hear people talk about Facebook it seems like their having a contest/race to see who has the most "friends."

Lady Gaga now has exceded 10,000,000 Facebook fans, which is more than any other living person. That's important to note because Michael Jackson has 14,339,711 fans, more than any other talented person has exceded.

That is totally possible. You can set security at any level you desire, and different combinations even will make sure you only see those you wish.
You are correct, some immature people seem to think the more "friends" they have, the more they are winning. But, "These Friends" are really not as good as what many call acquaintances. Seems like they do not understand the real meaning of "friend."
If we are lucky we may have half a dozen "real friends" in a lifetime. My real friends include two guys who have been friends for over 35 years. They have proven their friendship, the same way Ive proven it to them, by our behavior or what we are willing to do for each other and what we have done. There are a couple of others that would be willing but have never had the opportunity. My youngest brother is also such a friend. We are always "there" for each other, when needed, and never avoid what we feel is the responsibility we have as a friend.
