Yesterday I towed my 2006 Jeep Wrangler about 50 miles before I noticed that my transfer case wasn't in Neutral, but in 4WD Hi. Its a manual transmission.

I drove it a bit today and it seems fine, but I can't believe I can make that big a mistake and not pay for it....

Has anyone else had this experience?

Was the transmission (I know transfer case wasn't) in netural? If so. Maybe all you did was to oil up the diffs, and use a little bit more fuel.

yes, I did have the transmission in neutral and the key in the right position for disabling the steering lock.

so maybe I'm OK then?

Only 50 miles, probably no damage.

The speed you were towing for those 50 miles would be a big factor. I would drain & replace the transfer case fluid at your earliest opportunity.

You probably shortened the life of your transmission output shaft bearing by, oh, I don't know, a year or so, or perhaps 1000 miles.
I don't think you have anything to worry about.
If you hear any funny noises out of the transmission, though, get it checked right away!

I think your transfer case got quite a workout. I doubt you did any real harm though. I've had 3 jeep wranglers 2002, 2006 & 2012. I haven't duplicated your fubar, but trust me I've done as a bad or worse on a good day
