Slides are making some squeeking sounds when being deployed or retracted so I decided to grease the hanger bearings for the slide mechanism. While greasing them (one of which was completely inaccessible), I looked at the 'rack and pinion' type mechanism (not exactly sure what it is called but it is the toothed piece that meshes with the drive gear). It is completely devoid of any lubrication. Should this mechanism be greased as well? It seems that the metal on metal contact without any lubrication is not a good.

Does anyone grease the teeth on this mechanism?

Some say no but if you lube it, it will run much smoother and faster. Dry lube is good but I still use the liquid stuff. It seems to work better but I have to do it often, since it attracts dust and dirt somewhat. It only takes a few seconds per side and keeps it running very smooth.

Dry lube only as other have mentioned Clicky, this is one of several options out there. I do our's every few months.

Don't use tradtional grease. Buddy of mind did that and after his next trip he spent an afternoon removing the grease because it was full of dirt that was reaking havock on the gear drive.

Check your local Walmart camping section...I get dry slide lube there. Do not use wet lubes as they attract and hold dirt that causes wear. The dry lube can also be used on the wipe seal around the slide safely

Ok, now that you have raised it can anyone explain the lubrication process to someone who knows little about these things. Rails, gears etc. How do I find them and which do I lubricate with my dry lube?

I have sprayed my rack and pinion with Slipplate brand dry graphite lubricant. Runs smoother, quieter and seems to prevent rust.

On my coach there is a bar that runs from front to back on the coach that can be seen when you look in the cabinets. It is usually round and there will be round bearings that are about 2 feet apart that the bar runs through. There will be grease zerks (nipples) that you would need a grease gun to lubricate. Running perpendicular to this bar you will see a square tube that runs under the slide out. There is usualy one side of this bar that is open and you will be able to see a toothed rail on the inside that meshes with a gear. This is where you should use the dry lubricant. Hope this helps.
