There is a discussion on beginning RV forum regarding pricing on new RVs. I know that TCs are more expensive but I still expect to get a fair deal. My question is ...what if you have to order the model in? Do I still have bargaining power? TCs are few and far between here in WI. The dealers don't have the model and options that we want. I would think that we should be able to get a good deal. They know that it won't sit on their lot. What do you think?

I would check into purchasing a truck camper from the Western States as they are much more common and you can probably find a better deal. Others on the forum have said the same thing. Good luck on your new camper.
I would say that is a fair expectation on your end but what the dealer may do remains up to them. You'll just have to try and see. What model of TC were you looking for?
Like spacedoutbob mentioned don't overlook western dealers. There was a member on here from Tennessee if I remember right that bought his camper from the same dealer I did last winter. He made a trip out of it and came picked it up around Christmas and then went to West Yellowstone before going home. Point is, I think he got a good enough deal that the trip to get it was still worth it.
I would only buy from another state if I was planning on staying in that state for a while to use the camper. Too much warranty work with most units. It is just impossible to catch all the little things when you do your walk through. Needing to make a couple trips back and forth for service just put a bite in any savings. Use the standard rule of thumb 25% - 30% off MSRP and deal with the local dealer.

I maid the mistake of ordering a camper without seeing the layout till I got it. I was dissapointed in the spaces, such as the bathroom and overheads space in the cable er. It's hard to order from a catalog when you are spending that much money. If you don't like what you got, you take a big loss. Especially if Tc's aren't popular in your area.

If and when I ever buy again, I will buy out west, probably Oregon. Save on shipping and sales tax. Those two things accounted for around $4K additional on my last TC that I bought near home, not to mention the higher selling price as compared to western prices. I think it depends on a persons schedule and flexibility. For me, it would be just another vacation and as stated I would hang out for the first week or so near the dealer/factory and put it thru its paces until the bugs were worked out. Live and learn.

How do you save in sales tax? If it's less than WI, we pay the state we're buying in and the difference to WI, if it's more, then we just pay that states. At least our understanding. So, we're really not saving on taxes. They get their $ either way.
I can tell you I just recently purchased a camper from out of state. I visited multiple local dealers and looked at the floor plans prior to ordering. I attempted to get the local dealer's to come within 1-2k of the out of state offer, but the insisted I would never get it for the price I was asking.
I put in an order for my camper, have all documents signed and actually have a lot more add-on's than if I were to purchase locally (it would have been a 5k difference). Take your time and find a floor plan you really like and then shop around. I e-mailed dealers in Alaska, Oregon, Washington and Arizona and went with the one with the best customer service and best pricing.

The only time we pay sales tax on out of state purchases is if we have to register and title the vehicle once we get back into Pa. after buying it out of state. The difference is that in Pa. truck campers are not titled or registered, so we can avoid the sales tax. And if you buy in Oregon, that state has no sales tax. Its a win-win.
